DR ANNE HOGAN Director of Education
Anne took up her role as Director of Education in 2011. A former member of the Boston Ballet Company and Pacifi c Northwest Ballet, Anne holds a BA in English Literature from Harvard University, and an MA and PhD in English Literature from Brown University. She taught in the Department of Comparative Literature and was Director of Alumni Relations at The American University of Paris, and was previously Head of Dance Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, and Head of Postgraduate Studies and Research at London Contemporary Dance School. Prior to joining the RAD, she was an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Education at London Metropolitan University.
Anne has taught English and Comparative Literature, specialising in Shakespeare in performance, as well as both theoretical and practical courses in performing arts, specialising in dance. Her research interests include the role of ‘alternative somatic practices’ within classical and contemporary dance training, the choreographic legacy of George Balanchine, and Shakespeare and Dance. Anne’s publications include Balanchine Then and Now (Sylph Editions, 2008) and she regularly reviews in dance and arts publications.
MICHELLE GROVES Dean
Having gained professional dance experience in both Australia and the United Kingdom, Michelle spent some time training as a Labanotation practitioner and teacher with Ann Hutchinson Guest in London. Before joining the Faculty of Education in 2000, Michelle taught extensively as a freelance tutor. In her role as Dean, Michelle provides academic and administrative leadership across all Faculty of Education programmes, working closely with tutors, students and administrators in developing and promoting the business of the Faculty of Education. Michelle has written several modules for distance learning programmes and supervises Masters dissertations and continues to deliver guest lectures across taught programmes. She is Editor of the Faculty’s newsletter, Focus on Education. Michelle’s research interests are in teacher education and higher and professional education. Her current research focus, through the Institute of Education, London is on identities of dance teachers across sectors.
DR CAROL MARTIN Head of Research
Carol trained at Elmhurst Ballet School before completing the three year teacher training programme at the RAD, gaining her Licentiate in 1981 and enjoying a diverse career as an RAD teacher both in the UK and overseas before completing her undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of Surrey. She joined the Faculty of Education in January 2000 and has undertaken a number of roles in developing RAD professional teaching qualifi cations and university validated degrees.
As Head of Research, Carol co-ordinates research activities and events across the department, including conferences, guest lectures, collaborative partnerships and funding applications.
Carol is a committee member for the Society of Dance Research and the European Association of Dance Historians, and writes regularly for RAD publications.
Her research interests cross the borders of dance, history and cultural studies and include the cultural analysis of English ballet in the early twentieth-century.
