Master of Teaching (Dance)
WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE STARTING YOUR STUDIES WITH RAD? I originally trained for a degree in Contemporary Dance at LCDS before performing and then going on to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education: Dance Teaching at RAD.
Teaching is my passion, so having taught in both the public and private sectors, I wanted to further explore and reflect upon dance education and pedagogy.
WHAT AREAS OF THE PROGRAMME DO YOU ENJOY MOST AND FIND MOST USEFUL? The opportunity to set research projects that actually improve your own group of learners was the most exciting part of the programme for me, as you really notice what a student lacks and then research possible solutions. When the research is positive it provides a great feeling of satisfaction that you have enhanced learning opportunities and attainment for the students.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO DO ONCE YOU GRADUATE? WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE ASPIRATIONS? From all the knowledge gained throughout the programme I will have a wide variety of avenues to investigate. When I graduate, I would like to consider roles at a senior level within secondary education and the possibility of exploring teaching in Higher Education contexts.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAMME TO OTHERS? This is the perfect programme to study on to improve your understanding of practical and theoretical dance teaching practice. You have the opportunity to work with world leading dance educationalists who make it their mission to assist you in the journey of working at Masters Level.
AS A DISTANCE LEARNER, HOW DID YOU COMBINE YOUR WORK/STUDY COMMITMENTS? Motivation is the key to success with distance learning. The combination of working full-time and studying part-time demands excellent time-management and organisational skills. The modules are split into units so you can work through them in your own time. Through goal and priority setting it can fit into anyone’s schedule, no matter how busy you are!
ARE YOU PLANNING ANY FURTHER STUDY? In the future I plan to complete a Doctorate, following on from an area of personal interest in the Leading Learning Module. I would also like to pursue an Educational Leadership MBA.
