BA (Hons) Dance Education

WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE STARTING YOUR STUDIES WITH RAD?

I danced and studied at Doreen Bird College from the age of 16. When I left I performed on stage and on cruise ships as a singer and dancer. After this I taught dance vocationally in local dance schools delivering ballet, tap, modern, jazz and contemporary lessons. Now I am delivering GCSE and A level dance in a comprehensive school and I also teach dance and music in a school for students with disabilities.

WHAT AREAS OF THE PROGRAMME DO YOU ENJOY MOST AND FIND MOST USEFUL? The whole programme is extremely informative, but I think one of the most interesting things I am studying involves the background of why syllabi exist in their current forms and how much work has been done by others to really promote the value of dance as a living, breathing tool for education.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAMME TO OTHERS? Absolutely! Having come from a vocational dance background into

an educational environment, I am able to see that the programme is extremely useful to my work. It helps me to fully understand the different contexts and opportunities that dance presents, not just for myself but also for my students.

HOW HAS STUDYING WITH THE RAD ENHANCED YOUR TEACHING CAREER? I have become much more aware of how I go about things, especially in terms of planning and delivery. This is a direct result of what I have learnt so far and I hope that in applying my new skills and knowledge, my students will directly benefit.

AS A DISTANCE LEARNER, HOW DO YOU COMBINE YOUR WORK/STUDY COMMITMENTS? As I teach full-time, my main times of study are in the evenings, weekends and holidays. However, as I can put into practice so much of what I am learning, I feel that I’m continually reflecting and building on my knowledge during the working day too.
