Q&A Lightfalls Lightfalls Cally Law interviews Todd Bracher, the innovator behind Lightfalls.

1. What was the inspiration behind Lightfalls?

Lightfalls was a chance to experiment and to push our understanding of what is possible to achieve with light. As an amateur lover of physics and scientific principles, I had the opportunity to connect with 3M scientists to see if we could do something unprecedented in the lighting industry. We wanted to extend the reach of a single LED further than ever before. We wanted to create a solution for an Architect/Designer that would allow them to light a vast space with only one LED by controlling perfectly how the light is distributed. We are effectively reflecting the image of an LED over and over giving the illusion of multiple LEDs in the fixture when in fact there is only one. The inspiration was to express a beautiful scientific principle in a meaningful elegant way.

2. Why did you choose London Design Festival to launch? 3M's choice to introduce Lightfalls to the European market at 100% Design, along with other design lighting products and surface finishes, was as a follow up to the

recent US launch this past June at NeoCon in Chicago. London is an obvious choice as one of the world's influential hubs for Design and in many ways I am pleased as this is a sort of home coming for me after many years spent living and working in London.

3. How long did the idea take to turn into reality?

Lightfalls took about 6 months from sketch to fully operational prototype. The team was very fast and continued development through one year to fully optimise the optic design, material testing, and to ensure the product is the highest possible quality as known and expected from 3M. 4. What can we expect in the future from you and Lightfalls?

Lightfalls will continue to surprise us as it is a fully flexible system where the specifier can lay-out the product to suit any of the needs as no two installations need to look alike. As for the future, we have many new products on the horizon with 3M that will be equally surprising and challenging what is understood to be limitations. Watch this space.
