Retail Lighting


Lighting within a retail environment is key to maximising sales, from creating an aesthetic space to highlighting individual products or key areas of a store. When choosing lighting for a retail space, retailers not only have to think about the design and the look of the store but also the cost of running the lighting and the impact the system will have on the bottom line. Energy Works, a new energy cost saving solution for corporate and public sector organisations, recently found that the British retail industry is currently spending almost £8 billion a year on electricity bills. Inefficient lighting could be costing the industry up to 1.25 billion and if a more efficient system were to be installed, savings would help reduce overheads and profit margins. As much as 40 per cent of a retailer’s annual electricity bill is used on lighting and they could save up to £4,358.40 a year by switching to LED Lighting. Harvey Sinclair, Partner, Energy Works commented, “The past decade has seen the high street battle against increasingly challenging storms, and rising energy costs is just one element that retailers now have to face. However, by taking simple measures such as changing in-store lighting and gaining a better understanding of their overall energy usage, retailers can dramatically reduce their annual outgoings therefore unlocking hidden profit. We understand that the prospect of switching to LEDs can be perceived by many as an expensive process. As a result we offer our clients a completely free of charge LED re-fit in return for a percentage of the electricity savings made over the contract period: typically up to 10 years. We hope that this new incentive will not only work as a financial support for many of our well-loved high street stores but will also reduce the strain currently felt by the National Grid.” Many products need spotlights to highlight them and items such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, electronics and housewares are all usually showcased in this way. Effective shelf lighting can boost sales and increase impulse purchases. HL Display produce a slim, cost saving light solution called the Ad’Lite slim. It is an effective option for retailers and brands and it has many features; it reaches maximum brightness almost immediately with no warming up time, and can be used either on

a shelf edge or to backlight products or illuminate branding. In addition it’s available in different colours. The system uses cold cathode, low consumption, florescent lamp technology, so whilst being highly effective it is also environmentally friendly.


The Ad’Lite uses less than half the


energy of the normal T5 fluorescent lamp and also offers longevity with more than 50,000 hours of light. Based on a lighting time of 14 hours per day, one 900mm strip of Ad’Lite consumes 1.4kw of energy daily, compared to the 2.8kw that a 230VAC (T5) fluorescent lamp would consume over the same time period. This
