he Ironman World Championships are held each year on the weekend closest to full moon, near the start of October, in the small town of Kailua- Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii. Often referred to as Ironman

Hawaii, or simply “Kona” within triathlon circles, this hallowed event represents more than just the  from both professional and amateur ranks; the race is a tribute to the birth-place and spiritual home of our sport. Now, strictly speaking, tri-geeks will tell you

that this isn’t the case. Triathlon was taking place in Europe and then mainland United States well before the “invention” of the Ironman in 1978, which was the result of a bet between endurance sports drinking buddies and the combination of three existing long distance races – all to be completed in a single day. Those same tri-geeks will also inform you that the original “Ironman” was started from the shores of Oahu, one of the smaller Hawaiian Islands. All of the above is absolutely true – the geeks

are right again! - and much has been written about the fascinating development of this type of triathlon, up to the point whereby it has effectively become a sport in its own right, known commonly as “Ironman”, and all of it well worth  
