• mp saddles up for bikeability Bike skills boost for MP

The government has just pledged its support for Bikeability and Cambridge MP Julian Huppert – co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling – has tried out the cycle training scheme first-hand with a two-hour taster session. Huppert met with Michael Frearson, National Standard Instructor Trainer from Cambridge’s Outspoken who teaches Bikeability skills in schools across the region. Huppert said: “We should be teaching our children to cycle safely as part of the school curriculum… if we get our children cycling they will hopefully get their children cycling.”

Northern Ireland’s MTB reputation climbs

A whopping 110km of MTB trails opened across four locations in Northern Ireland this year. Designed to boost tourism and support local populations, visitor numbers have doubled initial estimates, we hear. Chain Reaction Cycles is supporting two of the centres – the Castlewellan and Rostrevor MTB trails in the Mourne Mountains, as are a roster of groups from tourism offices and local councils. More details on those can be found at www.MountainBikeNI.com

Boris Bikes might have changed the face of London cycling, but does anyone ‘like’ them as much as bike hire in New York and Paris?

Push for Premiership

A 14 day ride around 20 Premier League grounds covered 2,000km last month, all in aid of Help for Heroes and ABF, The Soldiers Charity. The aim was to raise £250,000 for the worthy causes. National Time Trial champ Alex Dowsett was enlisted for the ride, pictured here with ABF’s Abbie Talyor and event organiser Paul Findlay. www.helpforheroes .org.uk

Making history at RideLondon

The popular RideLondon event garnered much praise from those taking part in its debut at the start of August. One of the many related events saw the National Cycle Museum take part. Twenty bicycles – including a Penny Farthing, pictured – were bought along to Hampton Court for the RideLondon/Cyclemania event by John Gill, job share curator at the Museum. www.cyclemuseum.org.uk
