NEWS UK stations go hire bike crazy

Raleigh to place Batavus built bikes at 50 UK stations before Christmas  Brompton Dock network continues to expand with Peckham Rye and more

By Mark Sutton

Everyone should have the opportunity to cycle safely whether they are commuting to work, getting fit or enjoying a leisurely ride out.” Gocycle founder Richard Thorpe commented: “I would like to congratulate the British government in acknowledging the importance of cycling. This £94 million funding in parts of England is just the start to what I hope as David Cameron said, the "cycling revolution". We need cycling routes to be properly maintained, in addition to creating effective routes in key major cities like Birmingham. There is still a huge mountain to climb...” CTC chief executive Gordon Seabright

added: “We’ve been campaigning for this for over a century. Now we hope this is just the start for cycling as a way of life in Britain.”

BOTH RALEIGH and Brompton have opened cycle hire stations at train stations this month, with the former promising 50 new hire points by the end of 2013. Having purpose built 600 'Amsterdam' bikes alongside Batavus, also part of the Accell Group that now owns Raleigh, the hire bike roll out will be complete by the end of the year on lines that are run by Merseyrail, Northern Rail, and Greater Anglia.

Speaking at the first of its launches at

Liverpool South Parkway station, Mark Gouldthorp, Raleigh managing director, said: “Bike & Go is a simple and effective concept which comes at a time when millions of us around the country are falling back in love with cycling, whether we're riding for pleasure or as a means of getting from point A to B. “We're proud to support a scheme

which encourages cycling as a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transport with added health benefits.”

The Batavus Amsterdam bike is kitted out with dynamo activated lights, luggage carriers front and rear, two integral locks, seven gears and an ergonomic saddle, among other features. Meanwhile Brompton Dock extended

its presence within the Capital with a newly opened hire point at Peckham Rye station. A further three Brompton Docks, housing 20 folding bikes, are to be installed shortly at southern managed stations in Redhill, Three Bridges and Haywards Heath.

Brompton Dock managing director Harry Scrope added: “The Brompton folding bike opens up a myriad of new travel opportunities for business and leisure travel. For £2.50 a day there is quite simply no quicker, more reliable or cheaper way across London. As a member of Brompton Dock you will find our folding bikes for hire at over 22 locations nationally, including eight in the capital.” www.bikeandgo.co.uk www.bromptondock.co.uk

Olympic venues set for March re-opening

The Olympic Velodrome - currently a construction zone

By Mark Sutton

BOTH THE velodrome and BMX track used for the London 2012 Olympic Games will re-open to the public on March 4th.

Now to be known as the Lee Valley

Velopark, the venues will initially charge the public £4 per session, or £2 for club cyclists.

The BMX circuit has been remodelled and now features a new mountain bike trail alongside it, as well as a floodlit road circuit. Olympic stars such as Bradley

Wiggins, Sarah Storey and Laura Trott will be present at the velodrome once

again on March 14th and 15th when the grand finale of the Revolution series takes place.

Both sites will now be run by the Lee

Valley Regional Park Authority. Chief executive, Shaun Dawson, is keen to emphasise that the facilities are as much for children, as for aspiring athletes and professional use. He said: “For people who have never

ridden a bike, to those who are setting world records, these unparalleled facilities will deliver the Olympic promise of inspiring a generation.” The venue will also be part of the

UK's bid to host the 2016 UCI Track World Championships.
