alternative to satisfy your sweet tooth? It is mango season in Florida and we have the great opportunity to enjoy tree-ripened mangoes for the next few months. You can buy them directly from the farms in Central Florida or the stores near you that carry local produce. Here are a few tips for selecting and enjoying your mangoes.


Choosing Your Mangoes Select large fruits that yield to gentle pressure and are just starting to soften.

This will ensure that the fruit will ripen. Keep mangoes at room temperature to allow them to ripen quickly or store them in your refrigerator to slow the ripening process. Some mangoes have surface marks and blemishes on the skin or sap oozing from the stem end. Don’t be concerned about either of these as neither the blemishes nor the sap will affect the fl avor of the fruit. Of the numerous varieties of mangoes grown in Florida, some have a red-pigmented skin and others don’t. Red does not indicate ripeness or sweetness of a mango. My favorite varieties are Kent and Hayden because they are creamy and sweet.


How to Enjoy Mangoes? Depending on how ripe they are will help you determine how to eat them. When the fruits are still fi rm they can be cut into chunks with the following technique:
