Davis and White win Readers’ Choice Award Fans of Meryl Davis and Charlie White put

a cherry on top of the ice dance team’s perfect season by voting them the winners of SKATING magazine’s 2012–13 Readers’ Choice Skater of the Year Award. Each spring for the past 25 years, fi gure

skating fans have been asked to vote for the eligible skater they believe is most deserving of the award based on the accomplishments of the past season. The achievement marked the second

time in three years that SKATING readers have bestowed this honor upon the Michigan team. They will be presented with the Michelle Kwan Trophy at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skat- ing Championships in Boston. The Michelle Kwan Trophy, which represents both the sport of fi gure skating and SKATING magazine, is a one-of-a-kind crystal sculpture designed by Crystal Signatures of Pennsylvania. “Charlie and I are so honored to have won

the Readers’ Choice Award and are grateful to all the voters for their support,” Davis said. World Junior pairs champions Haven

Denney and Brandon Frazier fi nished second in the online voting, with U.S. silver medal- ist Gracie Gold capturing third place and the reigning four-time World synchronized bronze medalist Haydenettes fi nishing fourth. Davis and White kicked off the 2012–13

campaign by claiming the title at Hilton HHon- ors Skate America in Kent, Wash. It was the team’s third consecutive Skate America title. They won their second Grand Prix Series stop of the season a few weeks later at NHK Trophy in Japan. It marked the third time they’ve won that event (2009, 2010). At the Grand Prix Final in Sochi, Russia,

Davis and White made history by securing their fourth consecutive title, besting their Olympic champion training mates Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada by nearly four points. From there, they captured their re-

cord-tying fi fth consecutive U.S. title in Oma- ha, Neb. “One of the most memorable moments

of this past season for us was performing our free dance at the U.S. Championships,” Davis said. “Charlie and I feel that there is something truly special about the U.S. Championships. Getting a chance to share our Notre Dame de Paris program with our friends, families and such a special crowd was an experience we’ll never forget.” Following their triumph in America’s

Heartland, Davis and White traveled a short distance from their training home in Canton, Mich., to London, Ontario, Canada, where they again fi nished ahead of Virtue and Moir to col- lect their second World title in three years. The fan support, they said, helped make

this past season and their career journey un- forgettable.

“Meryl and I have been fortunate to have

some of the best fans in the world,” White said. “The support we’ve received over the years has been tremendous.” While they look back with pride on the

past season, Davis and White are also dialed in for the upcoming Olympic season and can’t wait to kick things off at Hilton HHonors Skate America in their home state of Michigan. “Each year, we spend the off season hard

at work, trying to push our skills as skaters and performers,” White said. “As each new com- petitive season approaches, we eagerly await the ability to share the product of our labors. We can’t wait to debut our new material with a hometown crowd at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit this October!”
