S.BELBIN, LAPUCK SHARE EXPERTISE WITH YOUNG ATHLETES T. by PETER ZAPALO Olympic silver medalist ice dancer Tanith

Belbin and four-time reigning World synchro- nized skating bronze medalist Lauren Lapuck of the Haydenettes headlined the S.T.A.R.S. Com- bine in Boston on July 7, offering their expert knowledge of training and fitness.

Boston and Chicago finished as the top cities

in the S.T.A.R.S. registration challenge, in which they earned the prize of having celebrity skaters attend and speak at their combine. Chicago’s event, held in Oak, Park, Ill., took

place July 14 and featured two-time U.S. pairs champion Rockne Brubaker. Coverage of the Chicago combine appears in the August-Septem- ber digital edition of SKATING magazine. Joining Belbin and Lapuck in Marlborough,

Mass., was an all-star cast, including Team USA med- ical staff members Cynthia Ferrara, Ellen Geminiani and Olympic physical therapist Judy Holmes, as well as World Team trainers Mike Cook and Kat Arbour. Belbin, who now coaches and choreographs

programs, shared a philosophy with the eager skaters. “When you’re young it’s so important to get experience in many different athletic activities as a part of educating your body,” Belbin said. “Many sports — gymnastics, ballet, martial arts — will help you develop skills that are so relevant and helpful to your particular discipline. I think it’s remarkable to note that some of our top ice danc- ers also did triple jumps at one time. Te acro-

batics and flexibility that is required now didn’t exist when I started my training, and it was much tougher learning these skills at 20. “I think S.T.A.R.S. is a great program, be-

cause it looks at how you are developing your athletic skills at a certain age and test level. I also think young athletes are specializing in one dis- cipline — maybe too early — and I would en- courage them to take the time to have a range of experiences and, of course, have fun!” Lapuck talked about the approach that syn- chronized skating teams take toward off-ice train-

ing. Te top synchronized teams, she said, typi- cally train 11 months a year. “Well technically, July is our month off but we

all have gym memberships and I know we’re going to start back in August with our own S.T.A.R.S. testing, so I’m going to be practicing for sure.” Belbin and Lapuck also took questions from

athletes, parents and coaches, which ranged from recovery and nutrition to number of hours of training and cross-training. Peter Zapalo is the director, sports and science and medicine, at U.S. Figure Skating.
