ActivInstinct Magazine OPENING SHOTS

A warm welcome to the July issue of ActivInstinct magazine.

The 2012 Olympic Games seem to be approaching very fast. Later this month, on July 27, there will be exactly one year to go until the Games begin.

Simon Millet Managing Director & Founder ActivInstinct Welcome to our July issue.

I am delighted to see the Olympics organisers are making significant efforts to bring the Olympic Games to the British people. The plan to involve no fewer than 8,000 Olympic torchbearers on an epic Olympic Torch Relay is a great initiative. The relay will work its way around the UK over 70 days, starting in May next year and finishing on July 27 at the opening ceremony, and the British public were invited to nominate potential torchbearers people with a story that can inspire others. This is a great way to spread the Olympic spirit.

This is an issue that certainly refl ects the extremely busy sports schedule for the month with a nod to a great variety of disciplines.

While we are looking forward to the Olympics, in this issue we also look back, at the previous Games to have been held in London, in 1908 and 1948.

As we go to print , we are pleased and excited to announce that in conjunction with Skechers, ActivInstinct will be sponsoring a development team of young triathletes who over the coming months will be competing all over the world. Tennis is very much on the mind with both Wimbledon and the US Open. We look ahead at the US Open and feature interviews with both former World number 1 Caroline Wozniacki and British number 1 Laura Robson. We also have a quick chat with Men’s World number 8 Richard Gasquet.

To coincide with the fi rst anniversary of the Olympic Games we talk to Perri Shakes-Drayton and Christophe Lemaitre about life after the Olympics as well as a highly inspirational interview with a remarkable athlete in the form of Karen Darke.

Robin Barwick

Our competition this issue is a once in a lifetime holiday to Aruba, so good luck and enjoy this summer’s festival of sport.

We also have an exclusive interview with one of the greatest Olympic swimmers of all time, Michael Phelps. The American is aiming to rekindle his epic rivalry with Australian Ian Thorpe in London next year, and if both athletes can summon their best form for next summer, the quality of Olympic swimming in 2012 could be truly extraordinary.

London has a double calling to the world of badminton over the next 14 months, which should give the sport a much needed, and deserved boost in profile in the UK. Not only will badminton feature in the 2012 Olympics, at Wembley Arena, but the world’s elite players are preparing for badminton¹s second most important event at world level, the 2011 Yonex BMF World Badminton Championships, which are also set to unfold at Wembley Arena, from August 8-14.

From a British perspective, Olympic silver medallist Nathan Robertson is making his final World Championships appearance. Robertson is retiring from international badminton after the 2012 Olympics, and he and mixed doubles partner Jenny Wallwork will be among the favourites next month. Robertson is the finest British doubles player of his generation, and it would be fitting for him to take gold on home turf, this year and next.

By the time this issue is published the 2011 Wimbledon champions will have been crowned, leaving one more tennis Grand Slam for 2011 the US Open, which begins on August 29. In the men¹s final last year, Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets, but in 2011 Djokovic has found a new level, and it is virtually impossible to separate the two, particularly on the hard courts of the US Open. A repeat of the 2010 final match-up would not be a surprise, but calling the winner would be much more difficult. Such are the greatest rivalries in sport.
