Erie Bay Window Caboose 301 to 350 series
P. DUNN, COLLECTION OF JOHN C. LA RUE, JR.: PERKIN, IL; CIRCA EARLY 1950’S
Just who added the steel sheathing to some of the DL&W’s eight-wheel wood cabooses is a bit of a mystery. The DL&W did not do it to any of the cabooses used in service on its line and there is no record either way on what Keyser Valley sold or did by contract. On these cars, as well as the AD&N and ME car pictured in the article, one of the side end windows has been covered over. It is possible that the area behind the missing window could have housed a washroom. Also, note the narrow platform attached to the side of FCSBC No. 4904 (below) just below the cupola. Mexico was a few years behind the U.S. in work rules, so trainmen were still riding the rooftops to pass signals well into the 1950’s, and maybe the 1960’s.
