While there are no formal instruc- tions included, the back of the header card provides tips and techniques for the use of the included product. There- fore, the builder is required to rely on his or her modeling skills and imagina- tion to successfully assemble the com- ponents provided. This will not be diffi- cult for anyone with a moderate skill level that has assembled a laser-cut kit or two. In essence, these kits are scratchbuilder’s aids that will provide the modeler with an ample supply of raw materials for any project that they wish to design and build


While not specifically called out, it is recommended that the builder has ad- ditional parts and materials on hand, for example, a supply of stripwood for interior bracing as well as to be used for trim. A supply of additional sheets of Taskboard for floors, roof and other structural parts along with brick and stone texture sheets will come in handy as well. To this end, two packs of wall panels,


a pack of brick sheet and a three pack of Taskboard were used for this review since it was decided to use these prod- ucts to construct a full building rather than just a backdrop piece as illustrat- ed on the header card. The first step was to remove the win- dow and door openings from the laser- cut board and cut the four walls to the structure’s finished dimensions. A quick cut to the thin retaining points allowed the opening plugs to drop out and the joining ends of each wall were beveled at a 45º angle on a table saw. A


handed and a small metal straight edge was used to cut the straight sec- tions of each opening. Once the open- ings were complete, the sheets were cut to size and glued to the Taskboard using a Aleene’s Tacky®

nice was trimmed with stripwood and the laser-cut finials were glued in place to finish of this detail. All four walls were assembled before being primed and painted. Due to the overall size of the structure spray cans were used to apply paint to the model.


Individual


bricks were picked out with various colors of acrylic craft paint before a black wash was applied. Light gray/tan was then dry-brushed over the brick work to complete the finish. With the basic structure complete attention turned to assembling and painting the window and door inserts. Each window consists of two photo- etched brass pieces that make up each unit. The two parts are sanded to add tooth to their surfaces before being sol- dered together. This sanding will also help subsequent layers of paint to bet- ter adhere to the brass windows. For those who do not solder, a gel bodied cyanoacrylate adhesive will work suc- cessfully. Each window and door was then cleaned before being primed and painted.


The painted windows and doors are then allowed to dry completely for sev- eral days before being installed with Gel cyanoacrylate into the openings in the structure. The provided clear glaz- ing was cut apart, then masked and shades painted on with flat tan spray paint before being affixed behind each window with clear drying PVA glue. A flat roof was cut from a sheet of Taskboard and painted before being in- stalled on the building. Sills cut from stripwood and other small after-mar- ket details were then added to com- plete the model. The N Scale Architect has provided the basic materials needed to construct any number of factory buildings using the wall panel system kits that follow common building practices used dur- ing the nineteenth and early twentieth century. These kits are a perfect start- ing point for any number of projects for anyone with a medium level of assem- bly skills. As with any kit or scratch-
