Re-creating the Southern Pacific Daylight has been one of the Holy Grails for model railroaders since the train was first introduced and there are dozens of manufacturers who have risen to the challenge. Now Broadway Limited has announced their own HO version of the Daylight GS-4 locomo- tive to round end observation car. This is a complete train, matching colors throughout and requiring only the pur- chase price with no special kits, decals, retrofit trucks or accessories to daunt the willing modeler.

Our review sample is SP 2955, a par-

lor-observation (79-PRO-2) completed by Pullman in 1941. The car is modeled as it appeared in 1953, after the mid- car skirting had been removed to im- prove service access to the under floor utilities but before the full width di- aphragms were removed. The pre-war, two-tiered Pullman fluted panels are accurately modeled and the car is deco- rated in the correct lettering gray striping. The “Southern Pacific” in the letter board and the Daylight insignia are as they should be for the 1947-1958 Common Standard specification. I sup- pose one could argue all day about what the real Daylight red and orange were, but the car is very convincing and Broadway advertises that cars and locomotives will match, a real plus that is seldom achieved.

Using Richard Wright’s Southern

Pacific Daylight volume (MPC, 1970), the Daylight bible in my opinion, every detail inside and out seems to be there and correctly decorated. Only two items don’t seem to comply: the win- dow shades, which should be blue ac- cording to Wright, and hand holds on the rear, they should be silver color to depict the cadmium plating. However, they could have been black by 1953. The interior features correctly colored upholstered chairs with white seat slips used in the postwar period. There are no passengers provided. Another great Daylight reference source is Southern Pacific Passenger Trains, Vol- ume 2 by Dennis Ryan and Joe Shine (Four Ways West: 2000). Broadway Limited has modeled the 4-TC-7 triple bolster trucks that are a hallmark of the pre-war Pullman light- weights. They are single piece plastic castings with metal bearing bars and metal wheel sets, insulated for electri- cal pick-up. Our sample weighed 6.8 ounces, heavy enough for good electri- cal contact. The wheel sets on this sam- ple were slightly narrow on the NMRA gauge but easily corrected with a slight twist and a drop of Lock-Tite. The wheels are free rolling and oper- ated flawlessly on a Bachmann E-Z Track test track with 22-inch radius curves and No. 5 turnouts. The Kadee
