so this book is a great resource for modeling the era before and after the war. It makes a good companion to Chicago Steam Suburbans, also by Campbell from the same publisher. I have some favorite photos that remind me of the city as I knew it growing up. I also appreciate seeing some of the vintage photos that Campbell collected that were taken before “his time.” This is, after all, an album. Even if one is not modeling these specific scenes, there is modeling information and in- spiration in these photos. The photos also filled in a lot of information I nev- er had access to, and that will be used for a seminar I am preparing on com- muter railroading. You never know what you will find or need to know un- til you open a book like this. The reproduction of the photos is
good, the printing is excellent, and the book is worth having. It is not just a col- lection of three-quarters view trains, though there is plenty of that. It is a record of railroading, to be sure, but also helps explain why we find it so in- teresting. There isn’t a diesel photo in the book, which is fine given its title so that is not missed. The only thing that is missing is a map. However, those are not hard to come by in other books or on the Internet, so anyone who needs more orientation for the main lines can easily find it.–BILL SCHAUMBURG
