16 APRIL: BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS Two passengers on an American Airlines fl ight bound for Chicago were removed prior to departure as, allegedly, they were speaking to each other in Arabic and that was causing concern to passengers, some of whom were runners in the Boston Marathon who were returning home.


16 APRIL: ISTANBUL, TURKEY A Turkish Airlines plane, en route from Istanbul to Kabul, returned to Turkey after an abandoned mobile phone found onboard caused panic.


17 APRIL: ENTEBBE, UGANDA


Muhindo Kalemba, a Congolese student, was detained, on suspicion of planting a bomb on a Kenya Airways aircraft. He had boarded the fl ight bound for Nairobi, and then suddenly decided to disembark in a distressed state. It later emerged that he was simply upset that family members were not on board.


18 APRIL: PIARCO, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO An American Airlines fl ight returned to Piarco International Airport when a suspicious package was found on board the fl ight which was bound for Miami.


23 APRIL: STORNOWAY, SCOTLAND A man inadvertently bypassed security checks and boarded a Loganair fl ight, where he sat and awaited his fellow passengers. He actually had a ticket and had even checked-in for the fl ight to Edinburgh via Inverness. Take off was aborted when the incursion was realised.


24 APRIL: NEW YORK


Part of the landing gear of one of the aircraft hijacked on 11 September 2001 was found wedged between two buildings at 45-47 Park Place, a few blocks from the World Trade Centre site.


15 MAY: BANGKOK, THAILAND Carlo


Konstantin Kohl, who was being transported from Australia to Germany escorted by two civilians, managed to escape during a transit stop at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport when his escorts fell asleep; bad weather had


delayed their fl ight departure from 11pm to 8am the next morning. The Thai Immigration Police offered a 10,000-baht reward for information leading to his arrest.


16 MAY: BRANDON, USA Robert Eugene DeNisco passed away aged 76. DeNisco is renowned for foiling the attempted hijacking of a TWA fl ight in 1970 when he shot and disabled hijacker Donald B. Irwin. Irwin had seized the plane and demanded the plane head for North Korea, but DeNisco, a security guard protecting the $50 million in cash and securities which was on board, was also armed and managed to neutralise Irwin.


23 MAY: SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA Ashley Jessica, 27, was fi lmed undergoing a pat down search at San Diego International Airport after refusing to be screened by an advanced imaging system. She later released the video online as part of her campaign to raise awareness about what she regards as invasive TSA practices. She claimed she was touched inappropriately, although the video shows that TSA offi cers acted professionally.


29 MAY: SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA


Reports emerge that a group of Russian- Americans were removed from a Spirit Airlines fl ight before its departure


to Las Vegas a week earlier. They claim that it was because they were speaking Russian, although the airline said it was because they were being loud and disruptive.


29 MAY: IQUITOS, PERU 1,000 protesters blocked the entrance to Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport, Iquitos, in protest against a proposed Civil Service Law reforming public sector jobs. Some Peruvian Airlines fl ights were cancelled.


30 MAY: ATHENS, GREECE


19 MAY: TEL AVIV, ISRAEL An army gas grenade was found in the suitcase of a 40-year-old American tourist on her way back to the US. It was confi scated, but the woman was allowed to fl y.


25 APRIL: WASHINGTON DC Michael Doyle, a 19-year-old man with Tourette syndrome, was allegedly not allowed to board a JetBlue fl ight at Reagan National Airport because he kept saying the word ‘bomb’.


2 MAY: ATLANTA, GEORGIA Sue Dubitsky, an innocent passenger from Rome, was bitten by a TSA dog at Hartsfi eld- Jackson Airport.


3 MAY: MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Approximately 300 taxi drivers blocked traffi c from entering or leaving the airport as part of a protest against a recent change in the airport’s short-fare queue system.

22 MAY: PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA About 20 people protesting their pending eviction from homes near Phnom Penh International Airport blocked people from leaving or entering the airport until 100 police offi cers broke up their protest.


Antonis Gregos, an extreme right-wing politician from the Golden Dawn party, was


checking his handgun in for a fl ight when it accidentally discharged.

3 APRIL: LAGOS, NIGERIA An argument between two passengers erupted on a Med-View Airline flight preparing to depart for Abuja. A passenger suspected that money had been stolen from his luggage by two men. The men were searched, money was found and they were arrested.


3 APRIL: DENVER, COLORADO A domestic dispute between a man and a woman broke out on a Southwest fl ight en route from Las Vegas to Denver.
