official transition to centralised security checks. The construction works, which are in progress at multiple locations in the terminal and on the airside, will last through mid-2015. It will be an operation with consequences for a number of sectors within the airport. The construction work will be fine-tuned in order to have as minimal effect as possible on the daily operations at the airport.
“…the façade will be extended 16 metres, creating the extra space necessary for the security filter…”
In order to ensure a minimal impact on the operations in and around the terminal, the project has been split up in different sequenced sub-projects. These sub-projects will be implemented in a phased timeline.
1. The realisation of the GH-building and the construction on the G-pier This sub-project consists of adding another level on top of Pier G and designing and building a GH building with a security filter and a border filter. Starting December 2012, works were started to get the area between Arrivals 4 and the G- pier prepared for construction activities for the new GH-building. The area in which the work is taking place is mainly landside as far as is possible in order

to minimise the impact on the daily operations and to ensure the safety of airside employees, as well as project employees. The construction of the GH-building and the G-pier began in May this year. These works will continue until the beginning of 2015. In the new GH-building there will be a central security filter and a border for passengers arriving at, or transferring in, Schiphol.
2. Expansion of the EF-area, and con- struction on the E- and F-piers This sub-project consists of designing and building a layer on top of Piers F and E and designing, building and furnishing the EF-zone, including a security filter for transfer passengers. The implementation of a central security filter on the second floor in the EF-area (above the Holland Boulevard) will require many adjustments. More space will need to be created on this floor. The façade between the E- and F- pier will need to be extended 16 metres on the airside to create that space. Also a number of commercial businesses will need to be redeveloped as well as a redistribution of some of the business lounges. The actual construction work for putting a floor on top of the E- and F-piers and the expansion of the terminal will commence mid-2013, and last until April 2015.
3. Building and placement of gatehous- es at the E-, F- and G-piers This sub-project consists of designing and building 28 gatehouses that will

be placed at the E-, F- and G-piers. Starting in September 2013, the first four gatehouses will be placed in a phased timeline starting on the E-pier. The remaining gatehouses will be installed and built at the airplane stands, also in a phased timeline up to April 2015. This phased placing of the gatehouses will be done keeping in mind other work being done at the airplane stands.
4. The (re)construction of the mezza- nines in Departure Halls 2 & 3 to create departure filters Designs are in the process of being drawn up for the (re)construction of the mezzanines in Departure Halls 2 & 3. The architect, Benthem, Crouwel, NACO designed table-shaped floors in the departure lounges to install central security filters for non-Schengen traffic with dedicated waiting areas. In discussions over the design, a lot of time and attention has been given to considering how passengers will be transported to the second floor where the departure filters will be built. How and where should the stairs be placed? After much thought a decision has been reached; in both Departure Halls 2 & 3, stairs will be placed along the rear wall of both areas. Starting May, and running through to October, pre-construction work (adjustments to and relocation of offices from the second floor to the third floor in Departure Hall 2) is taking place. Actual construction work will commence in October of this year, running through until April 2015.
