…enhance screening operations?

CHRIS GREY,

MANAGING DIRECTOR, QUADRATICA (UK) LTD.

The Security Officer of the future will, without doubt, be connected. Connected to the latest intelligence; connected to the regulatory requirements; connected to airport information; connected to passenger information. Connected!

On top of the connectivity will be the ability to access this information on a personal display, such as Google Glasses, with ease and discretion. This may seem simple and you may doubt the efficacy of Security Officers having such access to all of this data, but knowledge is indeed power. Fortunately, in this case, it is the power to carry out their duties more effectively. They will be able to use their skills in both security and customer relations to become truly effective members of the airport team by facilitating passengers through the security checkpoint process and providing them with any assistance they may require. The technology to achieve this is already available. 'All' that is needed is the provision of the data through a simple, single, cohesive interface. Of course the use of the word 'all' is, in regard to the dissemination of data, a very big word indeed!

…enhance cargo screening?

JAN KÄPPI,

MANAGING DIRECTOR, FINNISH SECURITY PROJECTS LTD

Since there have been significant changes in, and challenges to, the way in which the European Union and TSA require air cargo to be screened, technology manufacturing companies have been forced to come up with new, advanced, solutions. On closer inspection, it seems that there are two different

approaches and both have their supporters and detractors. In certain regions there is a drive to move screening away from the cargo terminals, using secure transportation chains, including known shippers and factory audits; this is passing responsibility to the shippers and allows the airlines to concentrate on their key business…flying. For the future, I am waiting to see a combination of advanced technologies that are able to scan bulk containers with integrated trace detection capability that is not limited to the detection of explosive devices, but also able to detect dangerous goods and other illegal substances. We must not forget that cargo profiling also offers an additional layer of security that has, in my opinion, been forgotten by the regulators; it is an essential tool for safeguarding air transportation.
