FOREIGN WORKERS DODGE £140,000 OF FINES IN PORTSMOUTH
A freedom of information request has discovered that Portsmouth City Council (PCC) is owed a staggering £140,000 by foreign workers who park illegally and ignore or dodge charges. PCC has now employed Euro Parking Collection (EPC) to chase overseas offenders in order to retrieve money owed. Foreign vehicles are not required to be registered with the DVLA, so drivers must be caught in the act in order to be fi ned. The bulk of the fi nes have been accrued by migrant workers who are only here for brief periods, which makes them even harder to trace. Weymouth council has also started a similar scheme. PCC traffi c and transportation representative Jason Fazackarley said: ‘The situation we have is that vehicles not registered in this country come and breach parking rules, even though foreign vehicles
are subject to the same regulations here as everyone else. But we now have an arrangement with a company which pursues them overseas.’
The past year has seen PCC successfully claim 300 of 1,000 outstanding fi nes, of which EPC gets 30 per cent.
DRIVERS CONDEMNED AS ‘SELFISH’ AT DUNDEE SCHOOL
A Dundee school is at the centre of a row about parking, with a small number of motorists being condemned as ‘selfi sh’ by police.
Despite the newly-built combined Victoria
Park Primary and St Joseph’s school site having designated parking areas, drivers dropping off pupils have been spotted stopping both on double yellow lines and the ‘keep clear’ zones.
A police spokesperson said: ‘It’s people being inconsiderate. It causes problems for road users, which is nothing new. It had been really good for a long time before that.’
