www.eca.co.uk High voltage specialist joins ECA
Bowers Projects – part of the Bowers Group of companies that are East Midlands ECA members – has recently joined the Greater London region. Bowers Projects is a high voltage specialist, and was formed
as a result of the opening up of competition in the distribution network operators (DNO) connections market. Its staff and approved contractors are DNO-trained and have a combined experience of more than 100 years in the electricity supply industry.
Barry Satur, director of Bowers Projects, said: ‘Our aim is
to form long-term relationships with our clients. We work closely with both the management of each company and its maintenance teams, off ering advice and services to manage its assets over the life of the HV network concerned. ‘We see the ECA as key to helping us

achieve our objectives, while also off ering invaluable support to our business. Prior to the completion of our membership application, we were invited to attend the London branch meeting as guests and were made to feel welcome, and we also received very good contractual advice on a prospective wind farm contract that we are currently pursuing.’
Running story
Peter Bowes, joint managing director of M&E (Fire & Solutions) and an ECA South West Essex branch member, ran the Brentwood half marathon on 24 March, to raise funds for a local charity, Farleigh Hospice. Tackling the 13-plus miles around Brentwood was testing
enough for most people, but for Peter – who weighed in at 23st 10lb before his training began – the prospect of the lengthy run was particularly daunting. However, having been inspired and encouraged by a friend who has been helped by Farleigh Hospice, Peter was ready and raring to get to the starting line. ‘I found a very good friend from school on Facebook who I
haven’t spoken to in some 28 years,’ said Peter. ‘I discovered he was living with an inoperable brain tumour and had been given only a few years to live. I was devastated. During our talks, it became apparent what he and his family had been going through. One thing that came up time and time again was the help that Farleigh Hospice had been giving him and his family. I was so moved by him and wanted to raise some money for the hospice. ‘On my fi rst practice run, I

remember getting about 500 metres from home and thinking I was having a heart attack. It was really hard. But I kept thinking to myself “this is nothing compared to the pain my friend and his family are going through” and my own pain stopped.’
Strictly Cymru dancing
The ECA Cardiff and Newport staged its 78th annual dinner and dance at the Cardiff Marriott Hotel in January, with almost 200 people attending the event. The branch held a charity raffl e during the evening that netted £800, which was divided between two causes – Age Cymru Gwent and Hospice of the Valleys. South Wales regional manager Michelle Davies said: ‘We’d like
to say a huge thank you to members and guests, who have always been generous in helping the branch raise funds to benefi t others that are less fortunate than ourselves.’
