aving operated as a sub-contractor for other mechanical and electrical companies for several years, Ian Appel decided in the late 1990s that it was time to put his knowledge and vision to best


possible use by starting his own building services company.


Looking good As a result, ILEC was born to provide high-quality electrical services and design for companies throughout England and Wales. A few years later, it was complemented by IMEC Solutions, which specialises in mechanical services. Appel says: ‘It’s hard to be unique in such a


crowded marketplace, but we feel that ILEC and IMEC are prominent due to our highly experienced team and the ability to carry out all building service


We have invested in our business, streamlined our processes, become even more proactive


disciplines in-house. We have a specifi c focus on continual customer satisfaction, and undertaking constant rigorous evaluations by external accreditors ensures we maintain quality and compliance throughout all of our operations.’ As for most companies in the building services


arena, the recession has caused a fair amount of concern. For ILEC and IMEC, it has hit profi t margins, payment terms and resulted in fi erce competition for each contract. Recognising the need to adapt to survive, Appel


took decisive action. He says: ‘It’s survival of the fi ttest, and we have invested in our business, streamlined our processes, become even more proactive and, as a result, have continued to grow at more than 25-30 per cent year-on-year by diversifying into other commercial sectors.’ With blue chip clients such as Premier Inn and
