Background
Historically, weld repair has been considered to have little to no effect on the mechanical and physical proper- ties of aluminum castings, but little evidence was avail- able to validate or refute the claim. A weld repair study was designed to consolidate industry welding best prac- tices, develop mechanical properties to demonstrate the efficacy of the practice and develop statistical data that facilitates acceptance of the weld practice.
Conclusions •
After comparing microstructures and test results, researchers found that repair welding with the process parameters used in the study has no detrimental ef- fects on tensile or fatigue properties of E357-T6 sand casting (Fig. 1).
• Properly accomplished GTA welding may be appropri- ate for joining sand cast components to each other or attachment of wrought products to cast products.
