creased in the Red River Basin in 2012 and defoliated all the saltcedar trees in dense stands along approxi- mately 2 river miles of the South Wichita River in King County. They were found along 12 miles of river but not visually affecting saltcedar in some areas. “The greatest surprise this past

summer was the discovery of the Uzbek species of leaf beetle in the Texas Panhandle,” said Knutson. “The Uzbek species was released at Lake Meredith beginning in 2005 and at Palo Duro State Park in 2007 but did not establish at either lo- cation. Releases of this species in 2008 and 2009 in Borden, Motley and Swisher County and at Lake Kemp also failed to establish. It was exciting when an observant rancher found the long-lost Uzbek beetles on his ranch near Clarendon in early July. This species defoliated large areas of saltcedar along the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red and Ca- nadian rivers and followed these watercourses east into Oklahoma. “It appears that the 3 beetle spe-
cies will continue to multiply and feed on saltcedar, eventually result- ing in minimization of saltcedar’s dominance over our waterways,” concluded Knutson. More information can be ob-
