involved with Vinyl 2010, which aims to increase the recycling of end of life PVC products by addressing the PVC industry’s sustainability challenges. “As protecting the environment is a key element of Gerflor’s manufacturing strategy, all our industrial sites and logistic facilities are ISO 14001 certified to ensure that they are managed in accordance with the internationally recognised, environmental management standard,” says Hardaker. “We also use life cycle analysis, which covers every aspect of environmental performance including raw materials, production, transportation, installation and the end-of-life of products. This guarantees that all elements of manufacture make a positive contribution to reducing waste and protecting natural resources.” For Gerflor this has included lowering
energy consumption, eradicating all heavy metals from manufacturing processes, dramatically reducing water consumption by using a closed- loop cooling system, as well as implementing best practice in industrial waste management, air pollution and water resource protection. Impressively, its VOC
emissions are on average 70% lower than the European standard. But it’s not just manufacturers who are making environmental efforts. Designer Contracts is the largest floorcovering contractor to the housebuilding industry, supplying carpets, wood and vinyl. But according to managing director Peter Kelsey, it’s not just the floor that counts but the underlay. “We strive to use the most sustainable products where possible,” he says. “We always check certifications with suppliers of wood products in order to ensure that materials are obtained from environmentally supportable sources, and the vast majority of our underlay is mostly made from the off cuts of new blocks of foam that are made for the furniture industry.” Underlay is particularly crucial
when it comes to preventing heat loss as different thicknesses provide different levels of insulation which contributes towards the Code for Sustainable Homes. And, even though flooring itself may not contribute at the moment, it certainly doesn’t hurt to be as environmentally conscious as possible.
