careers Barratt award winners

Two young apprentices working in Northampton are getting ahead in the construction trade after progressing through the Barratt Homes apprenticeship scheme and winning top local and national awards. Ondre Odain, aged 24, has scooped national honours by being named Apprentice of the Year for the whole country, while Jack Davey, aged 20, has been named Apprentice of the Year at a local level. The awards come as the company announces its plans to take on another 90 apprentices across the Barratt Group in 2013. The awards recognise the brightest talents and most committed employees throughout the company and the teenagers were chosen as top apprentices following their work on sites run by Barratt’s Northampton division. The Barratt Academy combines professional training with industry recognised qualifications and equips local students with the skills and knowledge required to become trade specialists, site managers and people with specialist technical and commercial knowledge. Managing director at Barratt Homes Northampton, Andrew Swindell, said: “Apprentices are a vital part of our business and we pride ourselves on the level of investment we make every year to ensure that talent is developed and valued.

“As both Jack and Ondre have demonstrated, completing an apprenticeship can open many doors to help you to achieve your career goal, and help you to build a long-lasting career in the housebuilding industry.”

Finding their mews

Five Londoners aged between 16 and 21 are part of an apprenticeship scheme being run by contractor the Ardmore Group at Taylor Wimpey Central London’s Mulberry Mews development in Highbury & Islington. Gerry Quinn, project manager for Ardmore at Mulberry Mews, said: “This scheme will really allow ambitious and hard-working young people to obtain first-hand training, something which is becoming a rare opportunity in central London.”

Esh Group apprentices

Esh Group has appointed two new apprentices, with Hannah Robinson joining the marketing team as a trainee and Kevin McCammon as a trainee IT support technician. Based at the company’s head office in Bowburn, County Durham, both will be working closely with their specialist teams in support of Esh Group’s operations throughout the North East, Yorkshire and Cumbria. Hannah will continue to work towards her NVQ in Business Administration and Kevin towards

completing his Level 3 Apprenticeship as an IT practitioner.

Lisa Stafford, head of business development at Esh Property Services, said: “We were very impressed with their enthusiasm at interview and the way in which they have both enhanced their education by adding new skills and experiences, sometimes not directly connected with the workplace. This made them eye-catching candidates when we received their applications.”

Housing graduates

University students are being given the chance to gain vital work experience and build essential knowledge and skills, as Redrow Homes launches its 2013 placement programme. Redrow runs an annual undergraduate training programme, which provides work experience for students. Two undergraduates, having completed placements, have been given full-time positions with the company. Last July Redrow welcomed back Sam Bullough (right), who undertook a placement with the housebuilder from August 2010 to September 2011. Sam has now taken up the position of assistant designer after completing his degree in architectural technology at The University of Huddersfield. Sam said: “I found the programme massively beneficial for my chosen career. It especially helps you to understand how a company works and how its different departments come together. The placement also prepares you for working life after university.”

“I would say to anybody thinking of applying for the programme to go for it, it is a great opportunity that provides you with priceless experience for your career.” Another recent Redrow recruit is James Morgan, a Cardiff University student, who undertook a 12- month placement at Redrow South Wales in 2011. After completing his degree in City and Regional Planning, James will rejoin Redrow in September as a graduate trainee. James said: “The undergraduate placement offered by Redrow has been fantastic hands-on experience within the industry. I’ve got so much out of it. It’s not about making the tea; it’s about adding real value to the company.”

Martin Gilpin, human resources manager for Redrow, said: “The undergraduate placement programme is an ideal opportunity for university students to gain fundamental experience in their chosen career path. The job market is extremely competitive and this programme gives them the perfect chance to gain the edge over the competition and forge a successful career in housebuilding.”
