Schoolgirl’s winning design Rydon Homes has set an interior design precedent by asking pupils of a school near its development of Crosshaven near Lewes to design one of its bedrooms – the developer will then faithfully recreate this design in its new show home. It’s thought to be the first time a housebuilder has ever carried out a competition of this nature, by engaging the local community in the design of its show home. Pupils of South Malling Primary school, situated next to the development, were set this challenge to design a bedroom suitable for either a 10- or 11-year-old girl or boy. The competition was judged by interior design company Andrew Henry Interiors who decided that Jodie Thompsett, aged 10, had created the best design by including such features as multi-coloured handprints on the walls and a round fluffy green rug. www.rydon-homes.co.uk

Gold certification for Aquadi Bathroom furniture brand Aquadi by Symphony has achieved an industry first by becoming the only supplier of its type to be awarded the FIRA Gold Product Certification. The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) has given Aquadi its gold standard seal of approval making it the only bathroom furniture brand to receive the accolade. FIRA Gold Certification signifies to specifiers and architects that the design and manufacturing processes are of the highest standard, something that is continually audited for consistent quality. Aquadi meets both British and European Standards, including independently verified testing of attributes such as structural performance, safety, stability and finish. Robert Newton, building division marketing manager, commented: “After launching Aquadi to the bathroom market in 2012, we are thrilled to be presented with FIRA Gold Certification status. This is a prestigious mark of excellence that underpins Aquadi’s position as a leading supplier to British housebuilders.” www.symphony-group.co.uk/aquadi

Barratt recognises H+H’s efforts

Smeg’s marathon success Following on from its successful fundraising efforts in 2012, when Smeg employees raised an impressive £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Smeg UK’s managing director, Mike Giddings (pictured), and HR manager Janet Rothwell have raised an additional £8,000 by completing the London marathon. Neither Giddings or Rothwell had competed in a marathon before, but they both managed to complete the course in impressive times – Giddings finished in 4 hours and 10 minutes, and Rothwell was close behind him, coming in at 4 hours and 21 minutes. “It was a fantastic experience – a real challenge for both of us but so rewarding, particularly as we managed to raise around £8,000, including a substantial donation from Smeg UK, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support,” commented Giddings.
