Allen has owned three All American Seniorsand was glad to see Bob Emmett (above left) get to VSC with the smaller brother, the All American. Bob’s is powered by an OS Max 15FP. A 1955 Coon Dog (above center), designed by Jack Macy, was carried to the VSC by John Miller of Salt Lake City. We are glad

Hazlam of Salt Lake City built this model in late 1955 and early 1956 and made a few modifications. The original cowl had a sleek- er look, but I really enjoyed the radial cowl as added by Lynn Hazlam, and applaud John for bringing this “survivor” to the 2013 VSC.

Roger Wildman’s California Beamer

Roger finally was harassed long enough that he re-created his Classic legal I-beam model of the mid to late ’60s. Roger powered his California Beamer with a more modern Randy Smith PA .40 Lite and muffler. The finish is Brodak with Randolph clear and weighs in at 52 ounces. The original model was built and flown in 1966, and he also flew it in the 1967 Los Angeles, CA US Nationals and placed well up in the standings. It has a 57-inch span and 650 square inches of wing and flap area. The nose moment is 9.25 inch- es and the normally measured tail moment is 15.25 inches.

All Americanby Bob Emmett Bob Emmett carried with him his Hal de-

Bolt All American. This is not the Senior ver- sion and is a smaller model with an OS Max 15FP for power. This All American does not have the huge offset that the Senior version has, but offers a long enough inboard wing to keep the model out safely on the lines. I was

to see John after his horrific accident and happy to view Lynn Hazlam’s version of the Coon Dog. Can’t have it any better than to win the Pilot’s Choice award twice at the VSC. The first time Gerry Phelps (above right) flew his Patriot in 2002 and this year again in 2013. Gerry has outdone himself again.

glad to see Bob get in some flights with the All American at this year’s VSC.

Patriotby Gerald Phelps Gerry Phelps first developed his Patriot in the winter of ’68/’69 in preparation for the 1969 season. It was powered by the new McCoy .40, and it flew very well. He then duplicated the model for the 1970 season and used it on the US F2B FAI Team which won the World Champs with Bill Werwage (1st), Bob Gieseke (2nd), and Gerry Phelps (4th). Josef Gabris nudged him out of third. The modern model was built in 2001 and was taken to the 2002 VSC in Tucson where it won the Pilot’s Choice for that year. Gerry brought the same 2002 model to the 2013 VSC and won the Pilot’s Choice Award for the second time with the same model. This model was powered by a Randy Smith AeroTiger .36 in its first build in 2001 and continues with the same power- plant for 2013. The 2001/2013 Patriot weighs in at 46 ounces and has a wingspan of 57.5 inches. I first met Gerry when he was returning to the Stunt scene at a con- test in Cincinnati during the late ’80s and now Gerry has overcome some medical is- sues. I am glad to have seen both of his re- vivals back into C.L.P.A.

Yak-9 by Leroy Black Jr. I caught Leroy Black Jr with an interest-

ing Classic legal model designed by Henry Quek and published in the February 1971 issue of Aero Modeller. The model has a 54.5-inch wingspan and has 650 square inches of area. Leroy uses a Sullivan 4- ounce round tank with uniflo tank supply- ing his Double Star .54. An 11–6 Xoar prop with a 2-inch DuBro spinner pulls the Yak- 9 through the air at a fast two-four-two break with 62-foot lines measured eyelet to eyelet. Excalibur 10% nitro, 5% castor, and 15% synthetic fuel feeds the .54. Leroy made his own canopy of a soda type quart bottle. He had to make a few to get what he wanted but is pleased with the final results. His paint is Randolph’s of California, and all his maskings were produced by John Calletine.

Two great CDs

Lou Wolgast and Robin Sizemore have had a wonderful hand at the reigns of the VSC for so many years. Their service comes to an end. They should, and have been, loudly applaud- ed for their tenure as the CDs for the past so many VSCs. I am so proud of them. Jim Hoff- man will now come to the podium and take over the very hard work needed to begin XXVI for 2014. Look for the dates of the next VSC in the Stunt forums, and you can check out the scores and awards for the 2013 ver- sion at: http://www.ccmaconline.org/results_ also.htm.

Henry Quek’s Classic legal Yak-9 (above left) was built and flown by Leroy Black Jr. at this year’s Flown in the Sun at the 2013 VSC. Although published in the February 1971 issue of Aero Modeller, the content and research has shown that it is a legal Classic model. Lou Wolgast (above center), co-CD with Robin Sizemore, captured the OTS Championship with his Madman ’56 and a Double Star .54. Paul Walker (at right) took the Classic Crown for the second time, but this time with his Ed Southwick Skylarkbuilt from a kit with only a replacement top block. He used period-correct items such as a Froom spinner, Y&O prop, McCoy .40 (with no muffler) and wheels, tires, and landing gear.
