Planes of Toledo 2013

The Helicopter category was well represented this year. Darrell Sprayberry of Dayton, Ohio built this impressive UH-34 (above) that would rival any Hollywood movie prop. The large Vietnam era helicopter featured a detailed cockpit (top,

at right) as well as a side gunner (above right) ready for any hot LZ. The AH- 64-A Apache(below left) of Russell Stockhausen placed a solid second while the SA-315B Lama (below right) of James Flynn placed third.

Mike Barbee, who is no stranger to scale models, brought his U.S. Marines version of the T-34B (above left) in the Non-Military Sport Plane category. Mike received first place for his work. Barry Hall believes real planes have two wings and a round engine like his Waco YMF-5 (above right). The modern bipe placed

second. Another T-34 (below left)—this time built from a Top Flite kit by Bob Ripley of Hurricane, West Virginia, placed third. William Gagnon Sr. brought this Balsa USA Ercoupe (below right) to Toledo. The model was covered with Coverite and trimmed in an authentic Civil Air Patrol scheme.
