No. 13 at Lake Shastina
meals. (Definitely try the pizza.) Lake Shastina also offers a par-34 nine-hole Scottish Links, which, with no bun- kers, is the ideal spot for novice golfers to gain experience and hone their skills. Just a half-hour
summer in Shasta certainly has its own perks. The regular greens fees
are a wallet-friendly $61, and golfers can play all day for just $99. Lake Shastina also offers 32 condos and between six-to-eight spacious and well- stocked houses to rent, and its restaurant, Putter’s Bar and Grill, recently overhauled its menu and is well-worth a few
drive south is the equally scenic Mount Shasta Resort, and its compact and sometimes quirky, but ultimately fun, golf course. “It’s not a long course, it’s
only 6,000 yards from the tips at 3,500-feet elevation,” says head pro Rod Sims. “What makes this golf course so chal- lenging is it’s fairly narrow. Accuracy is a premium. You seldom get a flat lie except on
the tee box. You’re always on some sort of uphill, downhill, sidehill lie. It makes it quite challenging.” While snow typically blankets Mount Shasta Resort from the middle of December through the middle of March, there are the occasional days in between when the course is fit for play, setting up the dream scenario for a true outdoorsman. “Last year the first two weeks of January we had great weather,” Sims said. “You could go skiing in the morn- ing at Mount Shasta Ski Park, and play golf in the afternoon. You could even fish, too.” And there is plenty of
snow to go around at Mount Shasta Ski Park. In 1959, it set the world record with a 189-inch snowstorm.
Lake Shastina also offers hunting for deer, antelope and elk, and fishing for bass, catfish, salmon and steelhead, among others, in the wildlife- rich region.
But for those who can’t get enough golf, try taking on the nine-hole Weed Golf Club, which more than holds its own every summer at the Siskiyou Open, as the winning score in the 36-hole event rarely breaks par. There’s also the nine-holers McCloud Golf Club (nine miles east of Mount Shasta Resort) and Shasta Valley Golf Club (40 miles north and host of the Yreka City). “The great thing about this
place is you can really do what- ever you want,” Graves said. Just about whenever you
want, too.
