We’re Listening E

very month, AAHA receives numerous calls, emails, and social media mes-

sages from members, nonmembers, and pet owners. Here are those that stood out recently.

“I have a question about the Borde-

tella canine injectable vaccine. Is it truly necessary on a yearly basis? Is it really safe? So much of what I have read says absolutely NO, that it is just like us catching the common cold. What do you think? Our three dogs are all small breed. Two dogs are 8 years old and the third is 2 years old. Thank you so much for any advice on this subject.” —Tena Hetzel (via Facebook) Thanks for your question, Tena! AAHA

has published Canine Vaccination Guide- lines that may help answer your question. They can be found on aahanet.org. Addi- tionally, we suggest asking your veterinar- ian to ask for recommendations for your particular dogs and their lifestyles. There can be so many different factors involved that we recommend asking your veteri- narian what is appropriate for your pet’s specific needs.

“Thank you AAHA for continuously

Heartworm Prevention Celebrated P

roud veterinarians raised their champagne glasses during the North American Vet- erinary Conference to toast to their collective success in preventing heartworm disease in 2012. AAHA and Merial hosted the 12.12.12. event to celebrate the efforts of veteri-

narians across America who pledged in 2012 to advocate heartworm prevention 12 months each year. 2012-2013 AAHA President Mark Russak, DVM, said the numbers produced by the

12.12.12. campaign speak to the power of what can be accomplished when veterinar- ians commit to a cause on a large scale. Approximately 11,000 individuals and 8,500 practices committed to participating

in 12.12.12. As a result of this major commitment, about 400,000 more dogs were protected from heartworm than in 2011.

Several AAHA members have called to

request the printed version of our Mem- bership Directory and voiced their appre- ciation for it, asking that it not be exclu- sively online. We hear you and plan to continue to

make the directory available in print for those who prefer it.
