THE CENTENNIAL

OF WWI – which began in the summer of 1914 and raged on until the Armistice of 1918 – will be observed around the world starting in 2014. Among the thousands of places throughout Europe that endured the terrible conflict, few suffered as much or are as symbolic as the medieval Belgian city of Ieper (better known to the rest of the world by its French spelling, Ypres), which was at the center of the fighting throughout four years of war; hardly a building was left undamaged by artillery bombardment. To mark the poignant anniversary of the First World War, we’ve added a new Tauck Exclusive to Belgium & Holland in Spring for 2014: a private visit and dinner for Tauck guests only at the In Flanders Fields Museum, dedicated to the events of the Great War and the battles fought here between 1914 and 1918, and set within Ieper’s historic, reconstructed Cloth Hall – a 13th-century medieval landmark nearly destroyed by shelling and meticulously rebuilt after the war.
