2. A DAY IN NÜRNBERG AND REGENSBURG Greet your first day on the beautiful Danube River with a full American breakfast and a choice of sightseeing excursions: Nürnberg is famous for its baking and bratwurst, a charming walled medieval town of castles, spires, and half-timbered houses that was once the center of the German Renaissance, a place of art, science and learning where Europe’s first print shop opened in 1470 and the works of Copernicus were first published in 1543. Nürnberg also figures large in World War II history by its better-known English name, Nuremberg. View Zeppelin Field, the monumental stadium designed by Albert Speer, where mass rallies were staged and Leni Reifenstahl filmed Triumph of the Will; view the site of the Nuremberg Trials, and visit the Documentation Center, a museum dedicated to the causes and consequences of the Third Reich. Alternatively, you can choose a guided walking tour of colorful Regensburg, whose Old Town is named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its treasure trove of medieval houses, Gothic churches, and the remains of Roman fortifications. Your sightseeing includes the twin-spired Dom (one of the most outstanding examples

of Gothic architecture in Bavaria), the market, the town hall, and the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Germany’s oldest surviving stone bridge), a link on the trade route to Venice that made Regensburg prosperous in the Middle Ages. You’ll also have a guided visit to St. Emmeram Palace, royal residence of Thurn und Taxis, the family dynasty whose fortune began in the 16th century and is the largest in Germany today. The castle, formerly a Benedictine abbey, is lush with Baroque features and frescoes, from the throne room to the ballroom and magnificent library, with displays of splendid art treasures, weaponry and fine porcelain – you can’t see it all, of course, since the family still lives here! Everyone returns to the ship this afternoon for lunch and time at leisure; tonight you sail for Passau. Meals BLD
