5. MIDDELBURG & VEERE IN ZEELAND Cruising through the Dutch province of Zeeland – once a collection of coastal islands – your riverboat arrives this morning in Middelburg. This maritime city with roots dating all the way back to the 8th century was among the most important trading centers for the Dutch East India Company during Holland’s “Golden Age” in the 1600s. After nearly a third of the city’s historic center was destroyed during WWII, much has been rebuilt and restored, and many original buildings can be seen on your city tour. Visit the Middelburg Abbey complex, dating to 1125, with its impressive tower, called Lange Jan (“Long John”) by the locals.
