AFS Individual Awards
Awards of Scientific Merit Scott R. Giese, associate professor at
the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, will receive the award for “leadership in the technical development of foundry practices while educating the youth of our industry to meet the scientific demands of the future.” Dr. J. Fred Major, retired research
scientist, Rio Tinto Alcan Interna- tional, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, was chosen for the award for “increasing the scientific understanding and extending the heat treat capabilities of the heat treatable cast aluminum alloy families.” Douglas S. White, technical ser- vices manager, Elkem Materials Inc., Boca Raton, Fla., was chosen to receive the award for “contributions to the industry through practical research and
sharing this information to further the knowledge of the cast iron industry.”

representative, Reich Companies, Trussville, Ala., was chosen “in honor, recognition and deep appreciation for his untiring dedication, service and leadership, as champion and ambassa- dor of the American Foundry Society, the Birmingham District AFS chapter and the metalcasting industry.” J. Fresno Valve & Castings Inc., Selma, Calif., was chosen for “dedicated and tireless contributions to AFS, CMI, the Copper Alloy Division and the metalcasting industry.”
Robert W. Smillie, president and
CEO, RWS Productivity & Quality Solutions LLC, Northville, Mich., was chosen for “dedicated service and leadership to the American Foundry Society in the fields of automotive aluminum casting quality and engi- neering, management and marketing and for mentoring FEF students.”

Directors’ Award will be presented to H. Fred Linebarger, Director of Technol- ogy, Miller and Co. LLC. Te award recognizes one who has made substantial personal contributions to the develop- ment and continuing successful opera- tion of the Institute and its programs.
