opportunities in the U.S., KSM Castings, Hildesheim, Germany, is expanding as a provider of complex light-metal components for power- train and chassis components in the automotive industry. “Tis decision to invest in a new plant in the U.S. is a further step in the global expansion of our pro- duction platform,” said Dr. Frank Boshoff, CEO, KSM Castings. “Te new production site in North Carolina will enable us to supply our current and future customers in the growing U.S. market on a local basis.” Boshoff cited increasing demand for efficient automotive products as the reason behind a growing need for light-alloy cast- ings with a high level of techno- logical quality. The facility in Shelby, N.C., is


scheduled to begin hiring and staff- ing in late 2013. It is expected to be operational in early 2014. This move into the North


American market is part of a global growth strategy. KSM Cast- ings is owned by the Chinese wheel manufacturers CITIC Dicastal. KSM operates six plants in Eu-


rope and China with 2,900 employ- ees. Its customers include automo- bile manufacturers and tier-one suppliers such as the Volkswagen Group, Daimler, ZF, Benteler and Bosch.

the new $180 million, 53-acre factory is equipped with its own electric substa- tion. New equipment will increase pro- duction dramatically, to 500,000 tons per year. Te site has energy-efficient melting equipment including a 70-ton electric arc furnace, which reduces emissions as well as the required


melting time. Additional in-house designed furnaces also are more energy efficient. Finkl serves primarily manufacturers in the mining, oil and gas, aerospace and other markets. Since 2007, it has been owned by Schmolz+Bickenbach AG, Dusseldorf.
