INDUSTRY NEWS Mohawk College Foundry Donates Surplus Proceeds to FEF Scholarships


In January, FL Sales Inc. pre- sented a check to Dana Coulombe for $76,495 at the Canmet Facility in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, toward scholarships awarded through the Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF). Te check represented the proceeds from an online auction sale of surplus foundry assets from Te Mohawk College Foundry. Te nonprofit FEF was established in 1947 as an independent extension of metalcasting educational programs at colleges and universities across the country. Its primary objective is to bring top quality men and women into the industry.

er StrikoWestofen Group, Zeeland, Mich., has won a new, large automo- tive order for a U.S. carmaker’s plant near Mexico City. For the joint proj- ect involving company subsidiaries in Germany, Poland and the U.S., the company is installing three systems for engine block and cylinder head casting. Tese consist of StrikoMelter aluminum ingot melting furnaces with integrated heat recovery, includ- ing all peripheral equipment. For cylinder block casting, the experts chose a StrikoMelter HS-N. Tis furnace is being manufactured in Michigan by StrikoDynarad and transported directly to its final loca- tion. In the second casting line, two stationary StrikoMelter MH II-N furnaces will be in operation. Te project is scheduled to be complete by spring 2013.


Te Wall Street Journal reports


one of Syracuse, N.Y.’s oldest manu- facturers, aluminum casting facility Oberdorfer LLC, has notified the state of its plans to shut down in May 2013. Te company has been in business for more than a century. Its leadership cited the economic impact of the recession, particular-ly on its aerospace business. Te closing reportedly will eliminate 86 jobs.
