determine the quality of the casting,” Kramer said. Ultrasonic testing also is used. “Engineering is a critical value-added service,” he added. Te company uses simulation software to work with customers on casting designs and optimize the casting process. Sivyer also imports castings for customers needing
smaller components, a move that resulted from its shift in focus toward larger castings during this latest expansion. “We wanted to diversify into more markets than mining and military, and we are now in seven markets,” Kramer said. “It’s an evolutionary migration, not revolutionary. We’re still heavy in the markets we’ve always served but we’re expanding into some others.” Caterpillar and Joy Global are major cus- tomers, and subsidiary Riverside Products consumes a large number of castings primarily for automobile recycling. “Our goal is to become world class in how quickly we can
take a request for a part and take it into production,” Mohs said. “We believe speed to market can become a core compe- tency for Sivyer Steel, which is important to customers.” In addition to implementing and training on lean
manufacturing, Sivyer’s leadership wanted to have a great safety record and attract and retain employees. Tere’s a growing enthusiasm among the company’s executives as they continue toward completion on the facility updates and plan additional projects in their ongoing mission to grow and continuously improve operations.
