PUBLISHING DIRECTOR & MANAGING EDITOR Alan Orbell
PUBLISHER FROM THE EDITOR The fi gures – 25 per cent cost savings and 75 per cent time
savings after switching from manual to online – say it all, that automation is the only way forward in an environment where savings are the holy grail of travel programmes.
These particular stats refl ect the move to online at an SME who made other fundamental changes, namely negotiating rates, preferred deals and exploiting MI. The full story of buyer Tony Silver’s journey is on page 6. What should naturally follow is managing and driving suppliers to ensure all of the commercial value negotiated is realised. Easier said than done, and one buyer, Caroline Strachan at AstraZeneca, has some advice on how best to tackle the subject of supplier management. See page 8. Managing ground transportation suppliers has not been a priority yet car
hire alone can account for seven per cent of a company’s travel budget. Simpler processes and better data is now available to make this spend an integral part of a managed travel programme. Find out more on page 56. Having said that, what you are able to negotiate with suppliers is a moot point, no more so than fuel surcharges when negotiating with airlines. They can become part of a deal, if you follow ex-Advantage exec Norman Gage’s steps on page 12. The odious Air Passenger Duty is another industry ill and is being targeted using new tactics by the GTMC's Paul Wait, its new chief executive. His plans are revealed on page 24.

One area the GTMC was reticent to talk about was TMC fees. The ITM tried to unravel the mysteries surrounding fees in its Remuneration Study and three years on the subject is still shrouded in smoke and mirrors. Our regular Debate feature, on page 22, tackles the subject and includes a TMC laying bare the marketing agreements that exist between some suppliers and travel management companies. How to do business in Philadelphia (page 67), where to meet in Chelmsford (page 68) and Flying to North & West Africa (page 70) are among the other far less contentious features that complete this issue.
