News Industry In brief…

TÜV SÜD Product Service has launched a Field Labelling service to help UK and European manufacturers of electrical and electronic machinery export to the USA more easily. Field Labelling is a mandatory requirement for most bespoke electrical and electronic machinery used in manufacturing or commercial sites in the USA. Premises that use uncertified equipment can be fined or shut down. TÜV SÜD is one of only 18 Nationally Recognised Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) in the world allowed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to perform this field evalu- ation activity. The service reduces complexity and cost, as it offers European manufacturers a combined local and USA-based service, as well as a next-day option for time-sensitive projects. www.tuv-sud.co.uk

6 Show dedicated to sensors and instrumentation market

Sensors & Instrumentation is a new dedicated exhibition which opens for business in Hall 3, NEC Birmingham on Wednesday 25 & Thursday 26 September 2013. Organised by leading industry publisher Datateam Business Media and trade show expert Trident Exhibitions, and backed by a wide range of industrial media organisations, this new event is built on the solid foundations of the previ- ous Sensing Technology exhibition.

Following positive feedback from the industry, Sensors & Instrumentation will be bigger and better and remain the only national show dedicated to the sensors and instrumentation market. It represents the culmination of four year’s hard work which has seen this dedicated national sensors trade exhibi- tion grow in size, stature, relevance and importance to the market. For those looking for new products or simply the latest information, the enhanced Sensors & Instrumentation 2013 exhibition will see every- thing brought together in one place – from sensors,

Growth expected to pick up in 2013 ABB’s green award

Manufacturers in the UK expect to reduce output over the next three months, and overall orders are flat, but the CBI is still expecting UK growth to pick-up somewhat in 2013.

Of the 409 manufacturers responding to the latest monthly Industrial Trends Survey, 19 per cent expect to increase their volume of output over the course of the next three months, while 28 per cent expect it to fall. The anticipated fall is broad-based, with only motor vehicles and the transport equipment sub-sector expecting to increase output. The total order book remained broadly flat this month and only slightly under the long-run aver- age, although there was an upswing in export orders. The export order book moved back above its long-run average. This upturn was driven predomi- nantly by the mechanical engi- neering, food, drink & tobacco and motor vehicles and transport

equipment sub-sectors. Stock levels remained stable after a fall last month.

The overall balance of eight per cent of firms expecting output prices to increase over the next three months changed little from October. The food, drink and tobacco sector anticipates a sharp rise in output prices over the next three months, but this is tempered by modest inflation expectations in other sectors. Anna Leach, CBI head of eco- nomic analysis, said: “Overseas demand has improved, but this has not been enough to lift overall demand and support modest expectations for growth in produc- tion levels in the previous survey. “Business confidence is under- mined by uncertainty over events in Europe and the fast approach- ing US fiscal cliff. However, we expect UK growth to pick-up somewhat in 2013 as this uncer- tainty gradually subsides.” www.cbi.org.uk

Warrington-based ABB has been presented with the EEF North West Region Green and Growth Award by sponsor ENER-G. ABB used technical ingenuity to persuade customers to adopt energy saving measures for motor-driven processes, develop- ing an energy appraisal and sav- ings illustration app that could help them reduce their carbon footprint and cut electricity bills. The company’s energy effi- ciency plan was developed to overcome market reluctance to try variable speed drives, which can reduce the energy used by motors by 20 per cent on average. The energy appraisal determines the energy saving and CO2 emis- sion reduction potential of a site in just half a day.

David Ost, EEF North West, said: “Manufacturing is vital to economic recovery and compa- nies like ABB are setting the benchmark for success.” www.abb.com
