broadcast WORLD Audio networks 101

Calrec follows up popular 2011 booklet with Audio Networking Primer, writes Erica Basnicki

WHEN CALREC published its Audio Primer booklet in 2011, it was picked up as a training resource by further education colleges, the IABM and several broadcasters. It also prompted a request for a second primer, which Calrec has already begun work on: the Audio Networking Primer. “Given the hugely significant

shift towards networks in the past few years, and the increasing emphasis on network protocols which we are seeing in broadcast infrastructures, we thought it would be timely to write a similar Primer on networking, designed for engineers to give an overview of the technology, terminology

UNITED KINGDOM Viacom/MTV vie for Avid

VIACOM INTERNATIONAL Media Networks (VIMN), parent group of MTV Networks Europe, is now in production at recently opened facilities in its north London broadcast centre, including a HD studio with an audio control room featuring an Avid System 5B. VIMN Studio has already been used on a variety of projects, including live music sessions and the telethon in aid of victims of Hurricane Sandy. The installation of the new HDTV studio, with its vision and sound galleries, and post- production area, including a Pro Tools edit suite, is part of a reorganisation of Viacom’s

operations in the UK. As part of this, the group’s joint venture partners, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, are moving to the refurbished studio building in Camden Lock. The new facilities replace two

large studios, which featured Calrec T Series digitally controlled desks. Facilities engineer Rob Muir says the aim was to be able to route signals more easily between the different suites and to set up equipment quickly for live broadcasts. Together with regular

freelance engineers and MTV staff, Muir evaluated a number of digital audio consoles, before

and developments happening right now,” said Henry Goodman, Calrec’s head of sales and marketing. The primer covers a lot of

ground, beginning with the development of networks and applications and goes on to explain the pros and cons of different OSI layers, interoperability, AVB and Ravenna, access rights, third-party control, video and comms integration and production automation. Sections of the Audio

Networking Primer are already online at community.calrec.com, and the company hopes to have a bound copy available as a free giveaway in time for NAB in April. “Networking technologies are

developing at such a rapid rate this Primer can only ever provide a snapshot of what is possible,” added Goodman. “It will provide a lot of background information to frame how far along this road we are, and to help provide a clue to where we are going. Network technology is developing so quickly, and broadcast audio people will be expected to keep up to speed with developments.”n www.calrec.com

Clear-Comhas relocated its UK headquarters. The new office is located at 2000 Beach Drive, Cambridge, just down the road from the company’s previous UK HQ. The new facility enables Clear-Com to continue its expansion in the region, while offering further creative resources for its staff members. Not only will the new location accommodate more personnel, but it also means the company’s product testing and simulation capabilities can be greatly expanded. www.clearcom.com

Spain’s national broadcaster TVE has invested in an additional nine Jünger Audioframe-based C8000 systems, bringing the total number of C8000 systems in use at its broadcast facilities to 35. The new equipment is primarily being used for play-out and for the editors’ rooms at TVE’s Torrespaña broadcast tower in Barcelona. A number of systems have also been installed in TVE’s production centre in San Cugat del Vallés, Barcelona. www.junger-audio.com

Turkey’s national broadcaster has upgraded its Izmir Radio Studios with a Studer Vista 9 digital console. The move by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation is a continuation of a long relationship with the console manufacturer. “I have been working at TRT for more than 25 years in a number of capacities, and all that time we have depended on Studer gear to get the job done,” said Erkan Gökceli, technical manager and designer at Izmir Radio Studios. www.studer.ch

All India Radio, the country’s national radio broadcaster, is replacing its existing news and radio automation system with the Radio-Assist 8.1 family of digital audio software programs. The installation of NETIA software at AIR's national broadcast station and across 48 local stations comprises more than 1,000 workstations. www.netia.com
