Goldcrest overjoyed at Les Misérables nomination

By Erica Basnicki

IT’S A good start to the year for Goldcrest Post London, having received nominations for BAFTA and CAS Awards for sound mixing and ADR on Les Misérables and Skyfall in January. In addition, the company said it is “especially honoured” by an Academy Award nomination for re-recording mixer Mark Paterson for sound mixing on Les Misérables.

“I am delighted that Mark has

received this recognition for his skills and dedication,” said Keith Williams, CEO at Goldcrest Post. Paterson joined Goldcrest

after graduating from SAE Institute, beginning his career under the guidance of Paul Carr,

before establishing himself in both recording and mixing. Les Misérables was the first musical Paterson has worked on. The film has been recognised

for breaking new ground, recording vocals from an all-star

cast – including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway – live on set using DPA 4071 lavalier microphones. The cast sang to a live piano accompaniment played to them through earpieces, with Abbey Road engineers on hand to ensure sound quality. “We went into this knowing

Mark Paterson, right, has been nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Les Misérables

that this is an iconic musical,” said Paterson. “Add to that attempting a new way of approaching sound for film. It was daunting but every member of the sound crew was really on board with the idea, and excited to be involved in it. There were people who just didn’t think it could be done, but none of those people were in our team.” n www.goldcrestpost.co.uk
