Oklahoma Youth Tour 50 Year Reunion

The Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives, Remember the days when people kept in

touch with far-fl ung family and friends by writing letters? I’m talking about tangible, handwritten notes on stationery, sent via

the U.S. Postal Service with a stamp. Today, thanks to laptops, smartphones, and tablet devices,

e-mail, texting, and social media have changed the way we talk to each other. And while these advances can make us feel like we’re “wired to the world” at all times, they can help us save energy, too. As a member of Touchstone Energy® Cooperatives, the branding program of the nation’s electric cooperatives, we are proud to offer two mobile apps: TogetherWeSave.com—Save Energy, Save Money, and one for our popular Co-op Connections® Card. The TogetherWeSave.com—Save Energy, Save Money app,

the newest addition to our Together We Save energy effi ciency campaign portfolio, lets you see how much money you could pocket each month by switching from traditional incandescent lightbulbs to compact fl uorescent lamps or light-emitting diodes. In addition, you can use the app to evaluate energy guzzlers in your home—for example, what does it cost to run a dishwasher for an hour? Kilowatt-hour rates specifi c to Harmon Electric Association needed for the calculations are available in the app by entering your ZIP code and selecting our name. In addition, the app delivers handy pop-up “Tip of the Day” reminders on ways to make your home more energy effi cient and displays important Harmon Electric alerts and updates. The free app is available for Apple iPhones and iPads at the iTunes store and for Android smartphones at Play.Google.com; search for: Together We Save. Your Co-op Connections Card connects you to savings on prescriptions, restaurants, hotels, groceries, and lots of other services from national and local retailers. The free Co-op Connections Card app uses GPS technology to help you quickly locate stores and businesses offering discounts and—better yet— share your favorite deals! Android and Apple iPhone versions of the app are available at www.Connections.Coop. At Harmon Electric Association we take pride in our promise of providing you with safe, reliable and affordable electric service. But our promise goes beyond that. We are also dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. These two money-saving apps are one more way we’re looking out for you! Find more ways to save at www.TogetherWeSave.com or www.harmonelectric.com.

Monthly Board of Directors meetings held fourth Thursday of each month

in conjuction with the participating electric cooperatives across the state, is coordinating a 50 Year Reunion Celebration of the Washington, D.C. Youth Tour program on July 20, 2013 in Oklahoma City. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson inspired the Youth

Tour when he addressed the National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. The Senator and future president declared, “If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capitol where they can actually see what the fl ag stands for and represents.” Consequently, some Texas electric cooperatives sent

groups of young people to Washington to work during the summer in Johnson’s offi ce. In 1958, a rural electric co-op in Iowa sponsored the fi rst group of 34 young people on a weeklong study tour of the nation’s capitol. Later that same year a busload came to Washington from Illinois. The idea grew and fi nally, in 1964, NRECA began to coordinate joint activities among the state delegations and suggested that co-op representatives from each state arrange to be in Washington, D.C. during Youth Tour week. That tradition continues today, almost 50 years later. Today over 1,500 students and 250 chaperones participate in the Youth Tour annually with over 70 students from Oklahoma attending each year. In all, Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives have sponsored over 2,600 students since 1964. All former Youth Tour alumni are invited to the reunion

in Oklahoma City. Exact location is yet to be determined but updates will be sent as soon as plans are confi rmed. Reunion registration information will be available on OAEC’s website www.oaec.coop after the fi rst of the year. There is no charge for former Youth Tour participants to attend the reunion and only a small fee for their guests. Join the Facebook group Oklahoma Youth

Tour 50 Year Reunion at https://www.facebook. com/groups/101798696649017/?ref=ts&fref=ts. The program plans include speakers like Randy Dwyer, NRECA’s Youth Tour Director. A photo booth will be available to take party pics and an all-year photo video is planned. Lunch will be included and there will be awards given during the program.
