LIVEWIRE D E C EMBER 2012 | VOLUME 63 I SSU E 12 | PUBLISHED FOR MEMBE RS OF TRI-COUNTY E L ECTRIC COOPE R ATIV E 2012 a success, 2013 projected to be

What can members of Tri-County Electric Cooperative look forward to in 2013? That is an important question with some clear and some ambiguous answers. Before looking forward to a new year, it’s important to look back at 2012.

“We began 2012 with much trepidation around rules the Environmental Protection Agency was enacting,” Tri-County Electric Corporate Services Vice President Zac Perkins said. “While some rules were challenged in court, that uncertainty remains. Those rules and challenges are not dead yet.

“We also have no clear national energy policy. Without this direction, powering the needs of future generations will be a challenge. As a nation, we need a national energy policy in order for utilities to efficiently plan to meet long-term generation needs.” Perkins said.

In other ways, the cooperative had a very successful year. Members saw electric rates remain the same for a second year in a row. Because fuel rates were so low, they actually realized a decrease in their power bills overall thanks to the cooperative’s use of a Power Cost Adjustment for wholesale power costs rather than building those costs into a fixed rate.

Many members received a check for patronage capital in 2012 when the cooperative retired it for the years 1977 through 1992.

In the coming year, the cooperative will continue to evolve to meet the ever changing landscape of the utility industry.

“Rates will remain the same in 2013, which is a big plus for our members,” Perkins said. “We will continue to see a steady rate in growth for electricity demand.”

Perkins noted that even though the government administration remains the same in 2013, without a clear national energy policy and with the involvement of the EPA, the energy landscape is still very uncertain.

One certainty members can count on is that Tri-County Electric will continue to look out for their interests. That’s why the cooperative provides free resources on saving energy and free detailed online bill analysis tools.

The cooperative also began offering a Pay As You Go option in 2012, offering members freedom and flexibility when it comes to their electric bill. The cooperative will continue to expand participation in the program in 2013.

Remember, as your local Touchstone Energy Cooperative, Tri-County Electric is looking out for you. n
