ParkWord November 2012

Having done so myself for over a decade, it now seems hard to imagine November without the annual pilgrimage home to Orlando, spiritual home of the theme park. The annual IAAPA Attractions Expo gives us all a chance to catch up with industry colleagues, whilst browsing the trade floor and picking up some additional insight at the many education sessions.

The timing is perfect. Coming as it does just weeks after the end of the park season in much of North America and Europe (other regions of the world are lucky enough to open year-round), operators are generally free to fly to Florida, see the show, check out a few parks and maybe even squeeze in a few days’ holiday (or “vacation” if you must). Whilst I understand that many parents’ plans are governed by school holiday periods, I can never understand those families that insist on visiting Orlando in the sweltering summer months when they don’t have to. Mid-November is a much better option – the weather is sunny and mild, travel tends to be cheaper (although not this year judging by the airfares Park World paid) and, after the Hallowe’en rush and before the Christmas holiday season, the parks are pleasantly free of queues. My only reservations about making the trip this time is that it’s not a vintage year for new attractions in Orlando. Nevertheless, Paul Ruben has done his homework and presents a few suggestions in this month’s Park Hoppin’ on page 10.

As for Attractions Expo, IAAPA did such a good job last month with Euro Attractions Show (EAS) in Berlin, it seems hard to imagine there can be much left to see on the show floor. But with over 600 more exhibit booths promised than Berlin, I’m sure there’ll be something. And of course, you can never have too much networking. Check out some of incoming IAAPA chairman Will Morey’s tips for Expo success on page 43. You can even pick up the latest issue of Park World from booth 4720. Oh, that’s right, you’ve already got one …
