MANUFACTURER NEWS ABC Rides

Founded in 1997 by Willy Walser, ABC Rides boasts a team with over three decades’ experience in the amusement business. The Swiss ride manufacturer, which specialises in water rides and family attractions, recently picked up a European Star Award for the Knight’s Fall water coaster at Wild und Frezeitpark Klotten (Germany) – the perfect cherry on the cake for its 15th anniversary celebrations.

Other deliveries in 2012 included the Dino Island flume ride and Boating School at Legoland Malaysia, mini flume rides for a children’s park in Timisoara, Romania (pictured) and an unspecified location in Asia, a Steyr tractor ride for Karls Erlebnis-Dorf in Germany, plus four Freefall Towers

Gerstlauer

Gerstlauer Amusement Rides has revealed details of several new coasters it is completing for the 2013 season. At Alton Towers in England, Gerstlauer is supplying the coaster codenamed as “SW7”. Based around the company’s EuroFighter ride, it will apparently feature a “game-changing world-first” element. Located in the X Sector area of the park, the project represents an £18 million investment for Merlin Entertainments and will open for the start of the season on March 7. For the German family park

Tripsdrill, Gerstlauer will supply a

launch coaster with a new style of car, while at Familypark Neusiedlersee in Austria, a Bobsled Coaster is on order. Gerstlauer will also be supplying trains to Rocky Mountain Construction’s remodelled Iron Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas and the Turbine launch coaster (originally by Schwarzkopf) at Walibi Belgium, just south of Brussels. The later will feature theming by Jora Vision. According to Siegfried Gerstlauer, there is also “a lot of interest” in the company’s Sky Flyer ride, as launched this season at Legoland Deutschland (as pictured), Nigoland and Nickelodeon Universe/Mall of America.

Mack Rides Mack Rides has a busy and varied

production schedule for the next 12 months and beyond.

New Mack rollercoasters planned for 2013 include a launch coaster (already announced) and a 458-metre-long spinning coaster for City of Arabia in Dubai; a launch coaster for Pengal in China (featuring a very similar layout to Blue Fire at Europa-Park); and a 480- metre-long YoungSTAR family coaster for Daqing Dream City, also in China. Following the success of the first ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Nickelodeon Land, three Twist ‘n’ Splash rides are on order for next season, for the Chimelong Group’s new Ocean Kingdom park in Zhuhai, China; Etnaland in Sicily and La Ronde in Montreal, Canada. Mack will supply the ride system for the new Temple X-Pedition dark ride at Legoland Deutschland, opening for the start of the German park’s 2013 season on March 23. A constantly moving train of 38 cars will wind its way through the attraction, which will last around 3 minutes per ride. Meanwhile at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, a car-themed Tea Cup ride will open in place of a car-themed carousel.

Mack has already confirmed two big coaster projects for 2014, including Europe’s longest launch coaster – featuring almost 1.4km of track – at Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden, and a Megacoaster (as pictured) for Nigoland, Dolancourt, France.

Sky Riser

Mondial claims to have reinvented the concept of the observation tower with its new Sky Riser (pictured, right). A modern gondola design and 360º panoramic views ensure a breathtaking experience for passengers. Available from 50 to 125 metres in height, it has a footprint of just 24.5 metres. The attraction will incorporate a new type of lifting technology, moving at up to 1.5m a second. High capacity and throughput is promised. The ride is available in both travelling and park versions and the first unit will be supplied in 2013. Mondial sales manager Theo Van Zwieten views the tower as an attractive alternative to an observation wheel. “A lot of cities have already had a wheel,” he notes. “The Sky Riser is easier to transport than a wheel, and is a much more reasonable investment.”

The company also has a concept for a new observation experience called the Sky Seeker (pictured, left), using the same tower column as its Wind Seeker ride but replacing the swinging chairs with enclosed air-conditioned gondolas as used on its giant Ferris Wheels.
