functions can be connected to each other by a sizeable but relatively simple traditional patchbay. This custom-built patchbay, based on standard 19in 1U panels with Neutrik D-range connectors, is routed to nine different boxes located strategically around the stage and the auditorium. The patchbay and the boxes have all types of signals available such as analogue mic/line, AES/EBU, MADI, HDMI, coax and more. The iLive itself also has

extra passive stage boxes to give the engineer the opportunity to connect their own gear when running the console.

Another function connected to the system is an electronic evacuation

setup that will mute the system as soon as an emergency occurs. Also installed is a Super Loop system, a state-of-the-art induction loop system. Separated from the system

is a four-channel wireless intercom setup from HME. This system also has full duplex capability and can be further expanded. The cinema is based

around an NEC NC2000 projector, which is capable of 2K cinema quality. The projector is also 3D capable, but this option is not yet installed. The Blu-ray DVD player is from OPPO. The picture signal from the

Dolby unit is transferred via HD-SDI directly to the projector, while other picture signals are directed via Kramer’s new SDI video switcher system, which converts the signal to the appropriate picture quality and size. The sound signal is transferred to the Datasat unit where it is converted to the sound system corresponding to the actual sound material of the movie.

MEETING NEEDS Crestron kit is used for overall control of the cinema and sound system as well as the curtains and a new lighting set-up. All basic scenarios can be met from a Crestron touchpanel, such as showing a film, a single lecturer with or without pictures in his computer presentation, or a small conference system with up to four participants. Setterberg reports that considerable time had to be spent on the grounding of the system, preventing hum and oscillations: “This has been sorted out successfully, but took some hours to do.” He also mentions another on-site issue that will be familiar to many readers: “All other contractors seem to have a priority over the audiovisual contractor, meaning that we often have to wait for builders, air conditioners, electric power contractors and so on. These traditional contractors often lack the understanding that we need a fairly clean environment to work in and that we need to do our measurements in a silent room, and they do not understand why we have a problem keeping their timetable. “However,” he adds, “with some compromises and co-operation most problems can be sorted out.”

November 2012 55 With the school staff

having started to be trained in the use of the system in September, Fassberg High School is now making good use of its new auditorium. “We’ve had positive

reactions from the staff at the school, all the way from the headmasters to the teachers and students using the system,” concludes Setterberg. “Some of the teachers were probably a bit scared about the new digital technology but we are currently in the process of teaching them at a higher level so they will be able to use the systems more thoroughly.” 
