SOLUTIONS: FASSBERG HIGH SCHOOL, MOLNDAL SWEDEN

Putting on a show

An auditorium designed to handle a wide range of educational events on a budget proved to be an interesting challenge, writes Tom Bradbury

[ABOUT THE INSTALLER]

 Based in Molndal, Sweden, Soliflex has experience of a wide range of audio projects of all sizes

 The company has worked on sports venues, opera houses and schools, offering services from consulting to project management

 It recently became a QSC Q-Sys Certified User Level One company, so can program Q-Sys DSP systems

The auditorium had to be able to handle music, theatre, conferences and more

WHEN LOCAL authorities in Molndal wanted to update their old system in the auditorium at the local high school, a number of requirements were key. As Fassberg High School has education programmes in subjects such as music, culture and theatre, it required a PA system able to handle rock music, a live theatre system, a 5.1 digital cinema system with full 2K capability and more. User- friendliness was a keyword

throughout the project, and created several collisions with the limited budget. The local authority turned to integrator Soliflex and its partner ITM to handle the design and installation. “A line array system was considered but created visual problems with the projector, and as the picture was an essential part of the system we had to go for a point- source setup,” explains Jan Setterberg, senior advisor at Soliflex.

A Crestron system is used for overall control of the cinema and sound system as well as the curtains and a new lighting set-up

Selecting high-quality

speaker systems within the limited budget was a tricky task, but the Renkus-Heinz CF Series proved the optimum choice. To achieve the necessary loudness and coverage, dual CF121 speakers were installed for the stereo system on each side, combined with two CF18S subwoofers centrally located under the stage to reduce phasing problems as well as generate the highest possible loudness.

For the cinema speakers, a double speaker system was used once again. However, this was not so much for level as for coverage, as these speakers were also intended for all voice amplification in the auditorium. The surround speakers are JBL 8320, powered by a Crown XTi amplifier. The system has a 40Hz-16kHz ±2.5dB frequency response, measured at 10 different points in the auditorium, easily meeting the requirements of the customer. And, as for intelligibility, ”the STI values averaged well over 0.65 and with no point under 0.62, which we consider to be a good result”, adds Setterberg. The maximum output (with pink noise) measured in the centre of the auditorium was about 1dB from the estimated 102dB, which is within the required tolerance. However, the auditorium will not be a certified THX cinema as it is not symmetrical enough to meet THX standards. To handle all different sound sources, multichannel AES inputs from the cinema server, EQ, delay and so on, a Datasat AP20 cinema

processor was chosen. Features of the AP20 include output to hearing aids, built- in HDMI (four in, one out) and full Crestron control.

CINEMA QUALITY A Dolby DSS200 server also features in the cinema system, storing full-format films in up to 4K, as well as having 3D capability. This makes it theoretically possible for the auditorium to serve as a local cinema, as it is fully capable of handling today’s cinema formats. The PA system has about

35 different microphones – from AKG, Sennheiser and Shure – as well as six wireless channels, which can be expanded to 12 channels if needed in the future. Four of the wireless

microphones are directly connected to the Yamaha DME 24 DSP unit, into its virtual mixer which is controlled by the Crestron system’s touchscreen in order to ensure ease of operation by people not trained to handle the Allen & Heath iLive mixer. The iLive mixer has its

stage box, located in the rack unit where different
