As befi ts the last issue of the year, our content is a real mixed bag of issues, all of which are vexing you to one degree or another. But in the year where the industry agreed that it would be benefi cial to stand shoulder to shoulder with suppliers as partners,

it’s disappointing to report on the British Airways Avios debacle, an example of a major supplier failing to canvas the opinion of its most lucrative customer, the corporate. Read what BA should have done on page 8. Similarly disappointing is the government’s west coast rail franchise disaster and, more broadly, the new fare hikes coming in early next year that may tip the balance away from choosing the more environmentally friendly and productive mode of transport over domestic air travel. See page 68. On a happier note, there is positive news on how the benefi ts of corporate

cards are fi nally getting through to the corporate – admittedly as much for easing working capital as anything else (see page 26) – and a review of all the ancillary services at UK airports that make a traveller’s business life that much more bearable, on page 68. We’ve gone overboard this issue on car sharing, without doubt the way

forward to combine being a good corporate citizen, by helping ease congestion, and ticking the duty of care box and saving money in one fell swoop. Our case study in The Knowledge highlights how the City of York Council achieved all three objectives with the help of Enterprise (see page 6) while on page 24 we profi le the new guy heading up Sixt rent a car and about to shake up car share with a brand new idea.

58 Traveller tracking technology has quickly become an essential element of

a well-managed travel programme – and we have reviewed developments in our feature on page 56 – but we have also debated how GPS tracking on the horizon will impact on privacy issues in our Debate on page 22. Check out our review of The Business Travel Conference 2012, which

starts on page 15 and, fi nally, look out for a supplement with this issue, The 2013 Guide to Serviced Apartments, our second annual take on this burgeoning accommodation sector.
