The days of carrying large amounts of cash are over, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by small business card payments specialists, CardSave. Nearly three quarters (74%) of

over 2,000 members of the British public surveyed carried £30 or less on average, with 62% of people carrying only £20 or less and 35% carrying up to £10.Yet almost everyone (93%) carried a credit or debit card. Over half (57%) believed that cash will become extinct at some point in the future – with 50% predicting that this will be by 2035. Over one third (36%) forecast that this would happen by 2025. And nearly half (40%) agreed that being able to pay for everything by card would make their lives easier. A further 30% have found

themselves inconvenienced in the past year by retailers that do not accept cards. In fact, 16% of people said they had walked out of a shop without making their intended purchase because the retailer didn’t accept cards, while 22% had been forced to leave to seek out a cashpoint. Nearly one in ten (7%) purchased less than intended due to retailers’ only accepting cash. According to CardSave’s data on card spending at over 50,000 small businesses, the average card turnover at small merchants in the second quarter of 2012 was £20,045.65. With only 12% of the population carrying £50 or more in cash, and 34% having made an impulse purchase on card in the last year, retailers who do not accept cards are therefore likely to be missing out on high-value customers. Clive Kahn, chief executive of

CardSave, commented: “The days when consumers wanted to pay by cash are over.They increasingly expect to pay by card for everything – from small shops to taxis and tradespeople such as painters and plumbers.”




ith mobile now accounting for nearly half of its web traffic, fashion retailer

Pretty Green has turned to ‘Simply Tap’ proposition from Mobile Money Network (MMN) to power the checkout in its new mobile store. Using Simply Tap allows Pretty Green customers, once registered, to pay securely and have their purchases delivered by tapping in or scanning a code on their mobile device. The development is the culmination of previous successful projects between MMN and Pretty Green, which have seen the fashion retailer, which was founded by Liam Gallagher of the band Oasis (pictured), use Simply Tap to sell accessories via Facebook, exclusive tickets to music-themed events and vinyl albums from its store windows in

partnership with Universal Music. Nigel Grant, Pretty Green brand

director, explained: “In the past year our mobile traffic has rocketed from around 15% of all web traffic in January to 44% now. It’s clear our customers want to use their mobile device to browse products and make easy, instant and secure purchases. After experimenting with MMN and Simply Tap, we know the service works and our customers like it.” Grant added: “This is another step

towards including mobile as an important part of the Pretty Green shopping experience. Our next step is to use the mobile and Simply Tap to sell an extended range instore.” MMN is a joint venture between

Monitise, Carphone Warehouse, Visa Europe and Carphone Warehouse co- founder Sir Charles Dunstone.


The world’s largest online betting company has chosen digital Skrill 1-Tap to offer instant and secure payments across all computing devices. Skrill 1-Tap allows customers to make payments by making a deposit in ‘one tap’ on

any device, rather than having to re-enter login details or credit card information. When customers make a payment via the service to bet365 for the first time, they are required to enter their payment details as usual and confirm that they wish to enable Skrill 1-Tap for future purchases. Skrill 1-Tap is then enabled for future payments. Bet365 has launched the digital wallet across all channels including desktop, mobile

and tablets, with the technology integrated into its standalone apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.
